Drawing on a quantitative analysis of hundreds of printed and archival sources from 77 towns, The Making of Urban Customary Law in Medieval England is the first cross-regional investigation into the history of urban customs since Mary Bateson's seminal, two-volume work Borough Customs (1904-1906). In contrast to English common law and church law, which both had long institutional and academic traditions devoted to training men in their legal philosophies, customary law constituted local practices that acquired the force of law over time. Death was a constant, visible presence in medieval and renaissance Europe. Yet, the acknowledgement of death did not necessarily amount to an acceptance of its finality. Whether they were commoners, clergy, aristocrats, or kings, the dead continued to function literally as integrated members of their communities long after they were laid to rest in their graves. This edited volume foregrounds new and vital scholarship shaping Scandinavian art historical research on the representations of the natural world. Contributors deconstruct the interlinking of people and land through critical readings of the Scandinavian representation of nature, bringing to the fore how the traditional focus on the landscape as a manifestation of temperament has tended to obfuscate critical approaches to the representation of the landscape. Making interdisciplinary connections, this volume redresses the imbalance in scholarship on the region that often emphasizes teleological national narratives and instead situates encounters with nature and the landscape in relationship to more interdisciplinary perspectives. Each chapter serves as a specific case study on topics ranging from circumpolar exploration and colonial practices, deconstructing National Romanticism myths, and contemporary artistic responses to the history of the politics of land. Francois Perron was born in Canada in 1797. He married Charlotte LeClaire and they had 12 children. The majority of their family eventually settled in Minnesota where they raised their families. Information on their descendants is included in this volume. Most of their descendants have remained in the Minnesota area.
The first uses of the term frontiere in thirteenth-fourteenth-century French were military, referring to the first line of troops in a battle. In architecture it meant the front of a building, and at the end of the fourteenth century it was first used as a geographical term, in Spain specifically about the divide between the Christians and the Muslims. More than obstacles, medieval frontiers - whether geographical, political, military, intellectual or artistic - seem to have been bridges and points of contact. Frontiers was the theme of the Third European Congress of Medieval Studies organised by the FIDEM in Jyvaskyla, Finland, in 2003. True to the nature of the FIDEM, it was highly interdisciplinary, bringing together scholars from all over the world, addressing problems ranging from Byzantine administration to Icelandic vernacular scribal culture, during a week of extraordinary intellectual excitement. This volume brings together forty-four contributions by specialists of history, history of ideas, medieval philosophy, philology, linguistics, literature as well as manuscript and archival studies.
