Kierkegaard and the Poetry of the Gospel

This is the first book in any language to collect scholarly essays on Kierkegaard's extraordinary series of Lily Discourses. Long considered “merely” devotional writings, the Lily Discourses constitute a sustained and repeated attempt to respond to the imperative issues in Matthew's Gospel. Kierkegaard discovers in figures of the lily and the bird a paradoxical obligation to think together, unremittingly, both suffering and joy, the fleeting nature of experience, and the effort to endow this very transience with enduring significance. In Kierkegaard and the Poetry of the Gospel, a diverse group of emerging and established interpreters addresses the religious, literary, and philosophical ...

Art and Praise in Kierkegaard’s Works of Love

Since art is essential to the love of one’s neighbor as oneself and to love’s chief goal of building up one another, we cannot understand love without also understanding its art. Observing that praise is ubiquitous in Søren Kierkegaard’s writings, Richard McCombs interprets Kierkegaard’s Works of Love as a eulogy of love’s arts of forgiveness, peace-making, and building up one’s neighbor in maturity and charity. Kierkegaard stresses love's ability to achieve results, calling love irresistible and almost magical in overcoming obstacles to its purposes; living the life of faith and love involves skillful attention to the specificity of the episodes in an individual’s life, and t...

While Kierkegaard is primarily known as a philosopher or religious thinker, his writings have also been used extensively by literary writers, critics and artists worldwide who have been attracted to his creative mixing of genres, his complex use of pseudonyms, his rhetoric and literary style, and his rich images, parables, and allegories. The goal of the present volume is to document this influence in different language groups and traditions. Tome II is dedicated to the use of Kierkegaard by later Danish writers. Almost from the beginning Kierkegaard’s works were standard reading for these authors. Danish novelists and critics from the Modern Breakthrough movement in the 1870s were among t...

Art and Transformative Experiences

  • Categories: Art

Does art rely on trickery and deception rather than honest argumentation to get us to upend our lives? Art and Transformative Experiences uncovers the hidden ways in which works of art can change who we are as people. It shows us how art does not so much inspire us to undergo transformations, as seduce us into undergoing them. Movies, novels, and songs do not actually give us reliable information about what a given experience would be like. But how do they trick us into believing we have received such things from them? Aumann draws on artworks including Ai Weiwei's political installations, Laura Aguilar's photographs, Kara Walker's silhouettes, and novels by Lauren Groff and Rachel Yoder. The goal is to understand exactly how art can get us to abandon who we have been and become someone new. He confronts the role imagination plays and art's effect on our values to find out how art helps us imagine what it is like to do things we have never done before. The result is a compelling new response to the moral problems posed by the seductive power of art, one that encourages us to open ourselves up to art's influence rather than fight against it.
