Affective Injustice in Healthcare
This book explores the ambiguous role of affects in healthcare work and medical education. At the same time that healthcare professionals are often encouraged to suppress or downplay their affects in order to maintain a sense of professionalism, those of patients are frequently misunderstood or unheard - both within clinical settings and beyond. We argue that these are examples of affective injustice, instances in which emotional expression is dismissed as unprofessional, unproductive, or inappropriate in healthcare. Polyamory and Reading the Book of Ruth is based on a simple premise- what if the Book of Ruth isn’t a love story in the vein of modern rom coms, but a different sort of love story? Many people are conditioned to read romance stories as resolving into happily married, dyadic couplings, most often heterosexual. But what if that’s not how to read the Book of Ruth? This book identifies a polyamorous hermeneutic and explores how it might be helpful in interpreting the Book of Ruth. Drawing on developments in both feminist and queer biblical studies, Deborah Kahn-Harris offers a close textual reading that focuses in on a triadic basis for examining the relationships in the Book of Ruth. Under what circumstances can love generate moral reasons for action? Are there morally appropriate ways to love? Can an occurrence of love or a failure to love constitute a moral failure? Is it better to love morally good people? This volume explores the moral dimensions of love through the lenses of political philosophy, psychology, and neuroscience. It attempts to discern how various social norms affect our experience and understanding of love, how love, relates to other affective states such as emotions and desires, and how love influences and is influenced by reason.
