Money in the German-speaking Lands

Money is more than just a medium of financial exchange: across time and place, it has performed all sorts of cultural, political, and social functions. This volume traces money in German-speaking Europe from the late Renaissance until the close of the twentieth century, exploring how people have used it and endowed it with multiple meanings. The fascinating studies gathered here collectively demonstrate money’s vast symbolic and practical significance, from its place in debates about religion and the natural world to its central role in statecraft and the formation of national identity.

The International Order of Asia in the 1930s and 1950s

This book reconsiders the nature and formation of Asia's economic order during the 1930s and 1950s in light of the new historiographical developments in Britain and Japan. Recently several Japanese economic historians have offered a new perspective on Asian history, arguing that economic growth was fuelled by the phenomenon of intra-Asian trade which began to grow rapidly around the turn of the 19th-20th centuries. On the other side, British imperial historians, P.J. Cain and A.G. Hopkins, have presented their own interpretation of 'gentlemanly capitalism', in which they emphasize the leading role of the service sector rather than that of British industry in assessing the nature of the Briti...

Reconstruction and Cold War in Germany

The story of the reconstruction of Germany, from a defeated and ruined fascist power to a democratic and economically dominant member of the European community, is one of the great stories of the twentieth century. This book explores one of the key institutions that helped generate this German recovery and shape its political landscape, the Kreditanstalt für Wiederaufbau, known in English as the Reconstruction Loan Corporation (RLC).Established in 1948, ostensibly to provide investment for German industry and help kick-start the economy, the work of the RLC was from the very beginning highly politicized and its role in German reconstruction went much further than simply providing funds for capital investment. Through its relationship with the USA and the Marshall Plan, the RLC played a significant role in the development of the Federal Republic of Germany and shaping relations with other countries, including those of Eastern Europe. As such, the RLC soon became an important instrument in the struggle for balance between US influence on the German economy and Germany's drive to establish itself as an independent and equal partner within the western camp.

West German Industrialists and the Making of the Economic Miracle

West German Industrialists and the Making of the Economic Miracle investigates the mentality of post-war German (heavy) industrialists through an analysis of their attitudes, thinking and views on social, political and, of course, economic matters at the time, including the 'social market economy' and how they saw their own role in society, with this investigation taking place against the backdrop of the 'economic miracle' and the Cold War of the 1950s and 60s. The book also includes an assessment of whether the self-declared, new 'aristocracy of merit' justified its place in society and carried out its actions in a new spirit of political responsibility. This is an important text for all students interested in the history of Germany and the modern economic history of Europe.

Cold War Modern

  • Categories: Art

Modern life after 1945 seemed to promise both utopia and catastrophe. Both could, it seemed, be achieved at the 'push of a button'. Published to accompany a major V & A exhibition, 'Cold War Modern: Design 1945-1970', this book explores how the politics of the Cold War shaped architecture and design. Reassessing 'classic' designs and introducing many little-known objects.
