Arnie: Pearls and Luggers in the Torres Strait

This is the story of Arnie Duffield, who arrived at Thursday Island, in Torres Strait, the Northern tip of Australia, aged ten, in 1936 - beginning a life-time of adventure. His father worked on the famous sailing luggers, diving boats that harvested pearl shells and pearls for over 100 years up to 1980. Arnie with his father and brother, with their own hands would build their own flotilla of luggers, to operate as a family company over eventful decades: seeing the Great Depression, war and the immediate threat of invasion, a post-war boom in the region, the loss of divers and constant striving for safety at sea, failures of an industry, mounting threats to the environment. Life B'long Ali Drummond

Ali Drummond, now 90 years of age, has lived an extraordinary life, by any standards. Orphaned when young, Ali took to a life of the sea at just fourteen years of age. Originally taken on as an apprentice, Ali applied himself to learning the skills he needed to survive and prosper in a sometimes dangerous life seeking pearl shells, trochus snails, and bche de mer. Alert to the Japanese divers' knowledge, Ali learned well from them and went on to become an expert diver and skipper himself. After years on the mainland supporting his growing family, Ali returned to his beloved Torres Strait. He has been a strong supporter of his community and has provided advice about the maritime environment he knows so well knowledge keenly sought by scientists and others. Alis granddaughter Samantha Faulkner has rendered Ali's life with affection, skillfully weaving together his stories, along with colorful reminiscences from his family.

Acceptance of Mediocrity

Are you gifted? Are you the best at what you do? One of the most difficult concepts for us to accept is the fact that as multi-talented as we may be and as competetive as we may be to achieve the best, there is always someone else out there who does it better. Read about an Iowa farm boy who strikes out for the big time, becoming accomplished in several disciplines from concert pianist to stenographer to master craftsman to automation expert to flight instructor to handwriting analyst to man of letters, but for all his talents is still mediocre in the end. Filled with humorous anecdotes and poignant moments, the book will have you spellbound to learn what characters lie in the path ahead.
