Decision makers in large scale interconnected network systems require simulation models for decision support. The behaviour of these systems is determined by many actors, situated in a dynamic, multi-actor, multi-objective and multi-level environment. How can such systems be modelled and how can the socio-technical complexity be captured? Agent-based modelling is a proven approach to handle this challenge. This book provides a practical introduction to agent-based modelling of socio-technical systems, based on a methodology that has been developed at TU Delft and which has been deployed in a large number of case studies. The book consists of two parts: the first presents the background, theory and methodology as well as practical guidelines and procedures for building models. In the second part this theory is applied to a number of case studies, where for each model the development steps are presented extensively, preparing the reader for creating own models.
Disruptive technologies are revolutionising the supply chain landscape, driving innovation, and unlocking unprecedented value to achieve radical growth and operational excellence. This comprehensive handbook delves into the cutting-edge research and dynamic debates surrounding the development of digital capabilities. It explores how emerging technologies such as blockchain, big data analytics, cloud computing, artificial intelligence, drones, autonomous vehicles, 5G, and more are reshaping the industry. By harnessing these technologies, organisations can fully capitalise on their transformative potential, paving the way for a future of enhanced efficiency, agility, and competitive advantage....
This book features a collection of high-quality and peer-reviewed papers from the 2023 7th International Conference on Applied Economics and Business, which was held in Copenhagen, Denmark, during August 24-26, 2023. ICAEB is held annually as a platform for the presentation of new advances and research results in the fields of applied economics and business. Applied economics is a way of dealing with esoteric economic concepts in a practical and analytical way. It allows for decisions to be made that are underlined by theoretical economic principles but utilized in such a way that they transform into real work applications. The contributors cover topics such as environment, development, finan...
27th European Symposium on Computer Aided Process Engineering, Volume 40 contains the papers presented at the 27th European Society of Computer-Aided Process Engineering (ESCAPE) event held in Barcelona, October 1-5, 2017. It is a valuable resource for chemical engineers, chemical process engineers, researchers in industry and academia, students, and consultants for chemical industries. - Presents findings and discussions from the 27th European Society of Computer-Aided Process Engineering (ESCAPE) event
Written by leading experts in the field, this book offers an introduction to recent developments in port and hinterland strategies, operations and related specializations. The book begins with a broad overview of port definitions, concepts and the role of ports in global supply chains, and an examination of strategic topics such as port management, governance, performance, hinterlands and the port-city relationship. The second part of the book examines operational aspects of maritime, port and land networks. A range of topics are explored, such as liner networks, finance and business models, port-industrial clusters, container terminals, intermodality/synchromodality, handling and warehousing. The final section of the book provides insights into key issues of port development and management, from security, sustainability, innovation strategies, transition management and labour issues. Drawing on a variety of global case studies, theoretical insights are supplemented with real world and best practice examples, this book will be of interest to advanced undergraduates, postgraduates, scholars and professionals interested in maritime studies, transport studies, economics and geography.
Scholars around the world examine a range of Industry 4.0 factors and their impact on improving the sustainability of global supply chains in Impact of Industry 4.0 on Supply Chain Sustainability. The findings are useful for researchers and practitioners in a range of fields and roles looking to create strong logistic networks.
Compared with dry cargo, temperature-sensitive products have some distinctive features which make managing the logistics process much more challenging. The importance of product quality, the need for specific transport fleets, the energy requirements for storage, handling and transportation of perishable cargo are some of these specific characteristics. Meanwhile, as cool chains keep getting longer and more complex, transportation options are also changing right along with it. This chapter provides an overview of different stages of a cool chain and the changes in managing transportation processes in each stage. We also discuss the concepts and technologies to achieve high-quality products as well as the sustainability in the agri-food supply chains.
The development of new food products has been a major driver of growth for food industry. However, it has been challenging for food companies to develop products and it is common that new products fail among consumers on the market. Since consumers’ wants change over time, we recognized a need to use an approach that can capture those changes to increase product success chances. In this thesis, systems thinking and system dynamics approaches were employed to develop qualitative models and quantitative simulations. Such models increase understanding of causal mechanisms that affect food product performance (e.g., sales) by uncovering and modelling feedback loops as sources of dynamic change...
