Prompted by recent challenges to and debates about the relative public silence concerning the effects of the Allied air war over Europe during World War II, this collection of essays examines literary, visual (film and photography), and institutional (museums) representations of the bombing of civilian targets, predominantly in Germany. The authors examine narrative strategies of both well-known and relatively little known works as well as the moral and ideological presuppositions of the varied representations of the depredations of total war. The introduction and afterword by the editors invite the readers to expand the contours and historical context of the debates about the German public discourse on the bombing war beyond the narrow confines of perpetrators and victims. The volume will be of interest to literary scholars, historians, and the general reading public interested in warfare and its effects on civilian populations.

Precarious Alliances
Starting from an analysis of practices of participation in contemporary print and other media, the volume opens up a historical perspective, probing the potential of the concept of participatory cultures for the exploration of past forms of collaboration between individual and collective actors (i.e. authors, editors, publishers, fans, critics etc.). Deutsche Dichter des 20. Jahrhunderts
Der Sammelband zur deutschen Literatur des 20. Jahrhunderts versteht sich als Ersatz für die überholten Bände von Wiese ("Deutsche Dichter ...": BA 309, 318; BA 257, 167). Der völlig neu konzipierte Band enthält 60 "wissenschaftliche Essays" (jeweils 10 bis 25 Seiten) zu Werk und Wirkung bekannter Autoren. Sie geben die wichtigsten Charakteristika des Gesamtwerkes und kurze Interpretationen einzelner Werke. Die Biographie ist sehr kurz gehalten, aber Bibliographie vorhanden. Die Aufsätze sind verständlich, informativ, schon für Schüler nützlich. 25 Überschneidungen mit "Deutsche Dichter", Band 8 (BA 8/90), der für kleine Bibliotheken reicht. Schmidts späte Dialogromane zeichnen sich durch eine in der deutschsprachigen Literatur einzigartige Fülle von Zitaten aus. Handelt es sich hierbei um banalen Eklektizismus oder eine metapoetische Kompositionstechnik? Um Letzteres nachzuweisen, konzentriert sich die Untersuchung auf die im Werk neu zitierten Literaturen, zeichnet an ihnen die differenzierte Verarbeitung von Fremdtexten nach und entwirft eine mögliche Dramaturgie ihrer Zeichensprache.
