Husserl, Heidegger, and the Space of Meaning

In this work Crowell proposes that the distinguishing feature of 20th-century philosophy is not so much its emphasis on language as its concern with meaning. He argues that transcendental phenomenology is indispensible to the philosophical explanation of the space of meaning.

This edited collection discusses phenomenological critiques of formalism and their relevance to the problem of responsibility and the life-world. The book deals with themes of formalization of knowledge in connection to the life-world, the natural world, the history of science and our responsibility for both our epistemic claims and the world in which we live. Readers will discover critiques of formalization, the life-world and responsibility, and a collation and comparison of Patočka’s and Husserl’s work on these themes. Considerable literature on Husserl is presented here and the two themes of epistemic responsibility and the life-world are discussed together. This work specificall...

Phenomenology and the Metaphysics of Sight

The articles in Phenomenology and the Metaphysics of Sight explore the uses and resonances of the paradigm of sight across the phenomenological tradition, with particular reference to the works of Husserl, Heidegger, and Merleau-Ponty. The axes of this investigation are the phenomenological readings of the notion of sight in ancient Greek philosophy, the ways in which phenomenology leads us beyond the primacy of sight, and the rivalry between the paradigm of sight and those of touch and hearing. The aim of this collection is to demonstrate that the use of the paradigm of sight pervades phenomenology and partially explains both the development of its self-criticism and its view on the history of philosophy.

Phenomenological Interpretation of Kant's Critique of Pure Reason

Phenomenological Interpretation of Kant's Critique of Pure Reason

The eminent philosopher delivers an illuminating interpretation of Kant's magnum opus in what is itself a significant work of Western philosophy. The text of Martin Heidegger's 1927–28 university lecture course on Emmanuel Kant's Critique of Pure Reason presents a close interpretive reading of the first two parts of this masterpiece of modern philosophy. In this course, Heidegger continues the task he enunciated in Being and Time as the problem of dismantling the history of ontology, using temporality as a clue. Heidegger demonstrates that the relation between philosophy, ontology, and fundamental ontology is rooted in the genesis of the modern mathematical sciences. He also shows that objectification of beings as beings is inseparable from knowledge a priori, the central problem of Kant's Critique. He concludes that objectification rests on the productive power of imagination, a process that involves temporality, which is the basic constitution of humans as beings.

Given the current mainstream landscape of philosophy, one might assume that phenomenology is merely a tradition, a perspective, or a method of philosophizing among others. Likewise, one might assume that ontology and metaphysics—despite being concerned with everything and anything there is—are just subfields of philosophy, such that one could engage in philosophy without engaging in ontology or metaphysics. This volume rejects both assumptions. Instead, it situates phenomenology, particularly in the context of the English-speaking world, in the philosophical tradition that attempts to achieve a unitary concept of philosophy as such, everywhere animated by ontological and metaphysical questions. The essays collected here attend first to the seminal determination of the concepts in Husserl and Heidegger, then to reformulations by Merleau-Ponty, Levinas, Derrida, and Deleuze, challenging standard narratives about the end of metaphysics and the limits of philosophy as phenomenology.

Meaning Takes Time to Unfold: Towards a Heideggerian Ontology of Temporal Differentiation

This book proposes a reconsideration of the intertwinement of time, meaning, and the piecemeal unfolding of things. It gives a phenomenological-ontological account of the time-horizon at work in each being’s manifestation, explores the notion of time as a productive resistance in this manifestation, and redefines human finitude and subjectivity accordingly to enable an attentive mode of waiting for meaning. The discussion is significantly informed by but not limited to the works of Martin Heidegger and thus responds to the question of the turn in Heidegger’s career by suggesting a systematic framework, centered upon a generalized finitude of Being as such, which may have consistently und...

Historical Dictionary of Husserl's Philosophy

Edmund Husserl is generally regarded as the founding figure of the philosophical movement of “phenomenology,” by which he understands a descriptive science of the essential structures of experiences and of their objects precisely as these are experienced. Phenomenology has had a decisive influence on philosophy in the 20th century, especially in Europe. The movement known as “continental philosophy,” whether practiced in Europe or elsewhere, has its roots in phenomenology and in the post-Hegelian philosophies of Søren Kierkegaard, Friedrich Nietzsche, and Karl Marx. Historical Dictionary of Husserl's Philosophy, Second Edition contains a chronology, an introduction, and an extensive bibliography. The dictionary section has more than 600 cross-referenced entries on his key concepts and major writings as well as entries on his most important predecessors, contemporaries, and successors. This book is an excellent resource for students, researchers, and anyone wanting to know more about Edmund Husserl.
