The articles in this collection are dedicated to the proposition that human beings make history, not just in the sense of being agents of change in the here and now, but in the sense that we interpret, appropriate and make use of the past for our own purposes in the future. Covering topics that range from teaching history, to the concept of property rights and the discipline of history in the television age, these essays will radically alter the notion of how we 'make history'. It will show that we are never fully able to bend history to our will, and that as we attempt to do so, we are often shocked at the turns it takes, despite our best efforts to shape it for future generations.

Tyler Perry has made over half a billion dollars through the development of storylines about black women, black communities and black religion. Yet, a text that responds to his efforts from the perspective of these groups does not exist.
Abner Jefferson Ponder (ca. 1755-1813), a Revolutionary War soldier, was born in America or Germany, possibly the son and Daniel and Jemima Bennett Ponder. After the war, he went to Virginia, where his oldest son was born in 1785. Soon after that time, the family was living in Abbeyville County, South Carolina. They were in Elbert County, Georgia, from 1787 to 1806; then migrated to Hickman County, Tennessee. Abner Ponder probably married three times and was probably the father of eleven children, born 1785-1813. Abner J. Hickman died at Bon Aqua, Hikman County, Tennessee. Descendants listed lived in Tennessee, Mississippi, Louisiana, Arkansas, Missouri, Texas and elsewhere.
