20 years ago, from July 8 to 20, 1990, 60 researchers gathered for two weeks at Castillo-Palacio Magalia in Las Navas del Marques (Avila Province, Spain) to discuss cognitive and linguistic aspects of geographic space. This meeting was the start of successful research on cognitive issues in geographic information science, produced an edited book (D. M. Mark and A. U. Studying Visual and Spatial Reasoning for Design Creativity
Creativity and design creativity in particular are being recognized as playing an increasing role in the social and economic wellbeing of a society. As a consequence creativity is becoming a focus of research. However, much of this burgeoning research is distributed across multiple disciplines that normally do not intersect with each other and researchers in one discipline are often unaware of related research in another discipline. This volume brings together contributions from design science, computer science, cognitive science and neuroscience on studying visual and spatial reasoning applicable to design creativity. The book is the result of a unique NSF-funded workshop held in Aix-en-Provence, France. The aim of the workshop and the resulting volume was to allow researchers in disparate disciplines to be exposed to the other’s research, research methods and research results within the context of design creativity. Fifteen of the papers presented and discussed at the workshop are contained in this volume. The contributors come from Germany, Israel, Netherlands, Poland, Singapore, UK and USA, indicating the international spread of the research presented in this volume.
Spatial Awareness of Autonomous Embedded Systems
Clemens Holzmann investigates the role of spatial contexts for autonomous embedded systems. The author presents concepts for recognizing, representing, and reasoning about qualitative spatial relations and their changes over time, as well as an appropriate architecture which has prototypically been implemented in a flexible software framework. His results show that the proposed concepts are suitable for developing spatially aware applications and that qualitatively abstracted relations can constitute an adequate basis for this purpose.

The Nordic countries are traditionally strong in the application of new computer technology. This work represents the state of the art in some of the artificial intelligence areas currently subject to active R&D. International researchers present 24 papers in the following areas: automated reasoning; qualitative reasoning; machine learning; neural networks; and knowledge-based systems. Theories and Methods of Spatio-temporal Reasoning in Geographic Space
"This volume collects the papers presented at the first international conference dedicated to spatial and temporal reasoning in geographic space, entitled "GIS: from space to territory - theories and methods of spatio-temporal reasoning". Within the National Center for Geographic Information and Analysis (NCGIA, one of the supporters of the conference) the importance of spatial and temporal reasoning was recognized several years ago. Initial research found that spatial reasoning in geographic or large-scale space is different from spatial reasoning in small-scale space, as usually dealt with in robotics and expertsystems. Temporal reasoning has attracted interest in the artificial intelligence community. The volume also includes two invited papers: "Do people understand spatial concepts: the case of first-order primtives" by R.G. Golledge, and "Temporal databases" by R.T.
