In the wake of a pandemic that tested economies and societies, geopolitical conflict has taken on a new intensity. The Rest and the West locates the origins of this development in the turbulent dynamics of the capitalist world market. Rather than reducing global conflict to a matter of great power rivalries or the process of economic decoupling, Sandro Mezzadra and Brett Neilson investigate the increasing centrality of war to capital operations and to the transformation of capital ism. The goal is to forge a theory of imperialism adequate to a world in which the 'rest' no longer provides a putative unity that defines and opposes the 'West'.
British fictions of the early twentieth century appear obsessed with Europe. Various texts from E.M. Forster and D.H. Lawrence to Bram Stoker and the period's travel writing explore European spaces, constructing the European as an Other threatening the position of the English. What they constantly repeat is England's difference and the secondary role of European spaces, whose representation resembles that of colonial lands. This book traces the dialogic relation between Conrad's Eastern fiction and other histories and argues that it is precisely in the intersections of art and history that we locate Conrad's irony. The dialogism of Conrad's East resists any finalising meaning and its loophole lies in subjective vision. In a direct response to the visual culture of his times, Conrad sets up his fictional world as a hallucinated mirage even as he stresses the veracity of his own Eastern vision.
