John Redmond and Irish Unity, 1912-1918
In his treatment of Redmond, Joseph P. Finnan demonstrates the multiple identities of the Irish Parliamentary Party as nationalist, liberal, and Catholic. He looks at Home Rule as part of a federal solution to the Irish question within the United Kingdom, the reasons for the failure of Redmond's war policies, and the collapse of the Irish Parliamentary Party as part of the wider phenomenon of the decline of liberalism during the Great War. As he looks at Irish nationalism in its worldwide context, Finnan also shows how Redmond's handling of organizational problems in America sets the pattern for his later handling of similar problems in Ireland.

Exploring the proliferation of hunger as a form of protest between the late-nineteenth and mid-twentieth centuries, Kevin Grant traces this radical tactic as it spread through trans-imperial networks among revolutionaries and civil-rights activists from Russia to Britain to Ireland to India and beyond. He shows how the significance of hunger strikes and fasts refracted across political and cultural boundaries, and how prisoners experienced and understood their own starvation, which was then poorly explained by medical research. Prison staff and political officials struggled to manage this challenge not only to their authority, but to society’s faith in the justice of liberal governance. Whether starving for the vote or national liberation, prisoners embodied proof of their own assertions that the rule of law enforced injustices that required redress and reform. Drawing upon deep archival research, the author offers a highly original examination of the role of hunger in contesting an imperial world, a tactic that still resonates today.

Johannes Kahrs
At first glance, Johannes Kahrs' dramatic paintings and drawings seem to carry forward the clear, everyday truths of snapshots; on closer inspection they become intricate, mysterious, fictional worlds. Kahrs manipulates found imagery from film stills, newspapers and personal photographs and liberates figures from their original contexts into dark, uncanny atmospheres. Through an intense pursuit of detail, he works to transplant into the viewer his own initial fascination with the image for its own sake. On top of all this methodology and maneuvering, he distances the viewer from the works by presenting them behind glass, so that their glazed surfaces throw back light and reflection. Kahrs, born in Bremen in 1961 and currently based in Berlin, has shown widely in Europe, at the Drawing Center and P.S.1 in New York, the Phoenix Art Museum and Miami's Bass Museum of Art.
Front of House
Front of House is a collaborative project that brings together two artists (Angela Ferreira and Narelle Jubelin), an architect (Marcos Corrales) and a curator (Andrew Renton) to create an exhibition. The title of the exhibition refers to the public areas in theatres and concert halls, and the exhibition seeks to bring unarticulated spaces and stories from the backstage into the foreground, within sight of the front of house.
