Handbook of Environmental Risk Assessment and Management

At the heart of environmental protection is risk assessment: thelikelihood of pollution from accidents; the likelihood of problemsfrom normal and abnormal operation of industrial processes; thelikely impacts associated with new synthetic chemicals; and so on.Currently, risk assessment has been very much in the news--therisks from BSE and E. coli, and the public perception of risks fromnuclear waste, etc. This new publication explains how scientificmethodologies are used to assess risk from human activities and theresultant objects and wastes, on people and the environment.Understanding such risks supplies crucial information--to framelegislation, manage major habitats, businesses and industries, andcreate development programmes. Unique in combining the science of risk assessment with thedevelopment of management strategies. Covers science and social science (politics, economics, psychology) aspects. Very timely - risk assessment lies at the heart of decisionmaking in various topical environmental questions (BSE, Brent Spar, nuclear waste).

Route Maps in Gene Technology

Route Maps in Gene Technology is an exciting new introductory textbook for first-year undergraduates in molecular biology and molecular genetics. The subject is broken down into 140 to 150 key concepts or topics, each of which is dealt with in one doublepaged spread. These range from basic introductory principles to applied topics at the cutting edge of research. A control strip along the top of the page shows the student which pages need to have been read beforehand and which topics may be followed afterward. In addition, at the front of the book are a selection of 'routes,' which the student or teacher may choose in order to study a particular topic. Because courses have become more 'modul...

Investigations in Teaching and Learning Languages

The book presents most recent investigations into foreign language teaching and learning discussed by prominent scholars in the field. A wide variety of topics ranges from theoretical approaches to foreign language instruction to a discussion of findings of empirical research in language learning and pedagogy. The theoretical part of the volume tackles issues which constitute the backbone to the understanding of the processes involved in language development, learning and teaching and thus contribute to applied research. The empirical articles in Parts Two and Three of the volume report on studies focusing on such important issues as various dimensions of awareness (language, cross-cultural competence or affectivity) and specific methodologies implemented in different educational settings (such as, for instance, dyslexic learners) or in teacher training programmes.

Multitrophic Interactions in Terrestrial Systems

Multitrophic interactions are now recognised as being of the utmost importance in understanding the complexity of the natural world. However, their complex nature had often been a barrier to their study as they require research teams composed of workers often with very disparate interests. This book therefore takes a multidisciplinary approach to complex interactions across many trophic levels and includes authors from disciplines as diverse as mycology, entomology, nematology, population ecology and theoretical ecology. Throughout, the direct and indirect interactions between organisms from different trophic levels are emphasised in comprehensive reviews, bringing a fresh, collaborative approach to community ecology. The book is ideal for those seeking an overview of our understanding of mulittrophic interactions as well as directions for future research.

ICRF Handbook of Genome Analysis

The combined power of genetic analysis and recombinant DNA technology to analyse entire genomes has moved biomedical research into a new and revolutionary phase. The complete sequencing and mapping of the human genome, as well as the genomes of other model organisms, will be the basis for our future understanding of human disease, and will allow us to answer fundamental questions about development and evolution. T The new ICRF Handbook of Genome Analysis is the essential guide to the enormous range of techniques available to the researcher for both the genetic and physical mapping of the genome, as well as the sequencing and analysis of DNA. It is both a protocol manual and a comprehensive i...

Ecology of Arctic Environments

Leading ecologists discuss the issues currently affecting the Arctic's environment in this important review. Early chapters provide a background to the soils and periglacial processes of the Arctic, and to the role of microbial and plant communities in ecosystem function. The following chapters consider the relationship between individual arctic species and their environment, particularly in the context of climate, whilst a further chapter draws together terrestrial and aquatic ecosystems. The book concludes with chapters concentrating on man's impacts on the arctic environment.

Toronto Trailblazers

The first-ever study of women in Canadian publishing, Toronto Trailblazers delves into the cultural influence of seven key women who, despite pervasive gender bias, helped advance a modern literary culture for Canada. Publisher Irene Clarke, scholarly editors Eleanor Harman and Francess Halpenny, trade editors Sybil Hutchinson, Claire Pratt, and Anna Porter, and literary agent Bella Pomer made the most of their vocational prospects, first by securing their respective positions and then by refining their professional methods. Individually, each woman asserted her agency by adapting orthodox ways of working within Canadian publishing. Collectively, and perhaps more importantly, their overarching approach emerged more broadly as a feminist practice. Guided by the resolve to make industry-wide improvements, these women disrupted the dominant masculine paradigm and reinvigorated the culture of publishing and authorship in Canada. Through their vision and method these trailblazing women became agents of change who helped transform publishing practice.
