A gorgeous picture book that pays homage to aviator Freddie Carmichael — the first Indigenous commercial pilot in the Arctic —with each month of the year highlighting moments from his life, the beauty of the North and the power of dreams. When Freddie was young, he saw a plane up close for the first time when it dropped off supplies at his family’s remote bush camp. He was instantly hooked. Freddie has flown for nearly seventy years, doing everything from supply runs to search and rescue to transporting dog teams to far-flung areas. This book celebrates Freddie’s early dreams of flying and his later achievements. Readers move with Freddie through the year, hearing about his journey as a pilot and leader, while learning the names of the months in Gwich’in and Inuvialuktun at the same time. Art from Inuvialuit painter Audrea Loreen-Wulf perfectly captures the incredible Western Arctic as well as Freddie’s love for aviation.

For the Love of Flying

This is the first book to tell the story of one of Canada's most innovative aviation companies, Laurentian Air Services, and thus fills an important gap in Canadian aviation history. Drawing on extensive research and interviews with Laurentian's presidents, pilots and ground crew, author Danielle Metcalfe-Chenail explores the company's 60-year history from its founding in 1936 in Ottawa with small biplanes through to the 1990s when it was operating scheduled flights with twin-engine Beech 99s and Beech King Air 200s. During those 60 years, Laurentian was at the forefront of air tourism in the Ottawa region and the Laurentian Mountains of Quebec as well as fly-in hunting and fishing in Canada...

The newest addition to the popular, full-colour Compass series for young readers explores one of the deadliest maritime disasters before the Titanic. In the early hours of April 1, 1873, the steamship SS Atlantic wrecked along the coast of Nova Scotia. It was one of the deadliest maritime disasters before its fellow White Star Line ship Titanic sank almost 40 years later. More than 950 people were on board--including about 119 children and babies. In the newest addition to Nimbus's popular Compass series, readers are introduced to the youngest of these passengers, from the teenage crew members to the children travelling with their families. They'll meet John Hanley, a twelve-year-old steerag...

Wawahte

Wawahte is a non-fiction book about three Aboriginal children born in the 1930's. Their experiences were much the same as it was for more than 150,000 Aboriginal children who, between 1883 and 1996, were forced to attend 130 residential schools and equally demeaning day schooling in Canada.

How a few women fought to board planes, then fly them, and finally to break through earth’s atmosphere into space. The story of how women in Canada, from Newfoundland to British Columbia, struggled to win a place in the world of air travel, first as passengers, then as flight attendants and pilots, and, finally, as astronauts. Anecdotes, sometimes humourous and always amazing, trace these women’s challenges and successes, their slow march over 100 years from scandal to acceptance, whether in Second World War skies, in hostile northern bush country, and even beyond Earth’s atmosphere. From the time the first woman climbed on board a flying machine as a passenger to the moment a Canadian woman astronaut visited the International Space Station, this is an account of how the sky-blue glass ceiling eventually cracked, allowing passionate and determined “air-crazy” women the opportunity to fly.

The Red Knight was the product of thirty years of meticulous research by aviation historian John Charles Corrigan. It is arguably the most comprehensive account ever written about the Royal Canadian Air Force’s legendary solo jet-aerobatics program. Now the author follows up that important work with The Red Knight Aircraft, a careful documentation of the triumphs and tragedies of each of the aircraft used by the program between 1958 and 1969. John digs into the stories of the four Silver Stars and two Tutors. He pays tribute to the pilots who gave their lives trying to push the limits of aerobatics, and the people connected to this colourful part of Canada’s past. Also included are the c...

Sovereignty and Command in Canada–US Continental Air Defence, 1940–57

The 1940 Ogdensburg Agreement entrenched a formal defence relationship between Canada and the United States. But was Canadian sovereignty upheld? Drawing on untapped archival material, Sovereignty and Command in Canada–US Continental Air Defence, 1940–57 documents the close and sometimes fractious relationship between the two countries. Richard Goette challenges prevailing perceptions that Canada’s defence relationship with the United States eroded Canadian sovereignty. He argues instead that a functional military transition from an air defence system based on cooperation to one based on integrated and centralized command and control under NORAD allowed Canada to retain command of its forces and thus protect Canadian sovereignty. Goette combines historical narrative with conceptual analysis of sovereignty, command and control systems, military professionalism, and civil-military relations. In the process, he provides essential insights into the Royal Canadian Air Force’s paradigm shift away from its Royal Air Force roots toward closer ties with the United States Air Force and the role of the nation’s armed forces in safeguarding its sovereignty.
