Unofficial Diplomacy
This book describes the progress of United States unofficial, non-governmental relations with Taiwan since 1979. For the first time in United States diplomatic history, the whole range of U.S. interaction with a foreign entity was carried out by a private, non-profit corporation, the American Institute in Taiwan (AIT). The history of the establishment and development of AIT is provided in this book, set in the context of the life and career of David Dean, founding Director of AIT. This book provides insights into U.S. relations with Taiwan and China, beginning with the founding of the Republic of China on Taiwan. Other themes include US perspectives on the reforms initiated by President Chiang Ching-kuo, the development of human rights in Taiwan, efforts to combat corruption, and the future security concerns of Taiwan
Writing Tamil Catholicism
In Writing Tamil Catholicism: Literature, Persuasion and Devotion in the Eighteenth Century, Margherita Trento explores the process by which the Jesuit missionary Costanzo Giuseppe Beschi (1680-1747), in collaboration with a group of local lay elites identified by their profession as catechists, chose Tamil poetry as the social and political language of Catholicism in eighteenth-century South India. Trento analyzes a corpus of Tamil grammars and poems, chiefly Beschi’s Tēmpāvaṇi, alongside archival documents to show how, by presenting themselves as poets and intellectuals, Catholic elites gained a persuasive voice as well as entrance into the learned society of the Tamil country and its networks of patronage. This project has received funding from the European Union’s Horizon 2020 research and innovation programme under the Marie Skłodowska-Curie grant agreement No 840879.

In Siva's Saints, Gil Ben-Herut challenges common notions about the Virasaiva tradition in its nascent phases. By closely reading the saints' stories in this text, Siva's Saints takes a more nuanced historical view than commonly-held notions about the egalitarian and iconoclastic nature of the early tradition, arguing instead that early bhakti (devotionalism) in the Kannada-speaking region was less-radical and more accommodating toward traditional religious, social, and political institutions than thought of today.
