Theology and Ethics of Oppressed and Marginalized Peoples

The book focuses on both historical and theological developments in world Christianity and social ethics, especially ethical challenges and opportunities that face minorities, oppressed, marginalized, and discriminated groups in any country or region of the world as we look to the future. It addresses the issues of methods and practices in social ethics, culture, and morality in Christian communities and theological discourse, and the virtues of Christian friendship in philosophical and practical terms. All these engagements are geared toward deepening our knowledge about the ethical dimensions of world Christianity.

Empires of God

Religion and empire were inseparable forces in the early modern Atlantic world. Religious passions and conflicts drove much of the expansionist energy of post-Reformation Europe, providing both a rationale and a practical mode of organizing the dispersal and resettlement of hundreds of thousands of people from the Old World to the New World. Exhortations to conquer new peoples were the lingua franca of Western imperialism, and men like the mystically inclined Christopher Columbus were genuinely inspired to risk their lives and their fortunes to bring the gospel to the Americas. And in the thousands of religious refugees seeking asylum from the vicious wars of religion that tore the continent...

Visualizing the Miraculous, Visualizing the Sacred

French historian Robert Ricard postulated a quick and facile evangelization of the native populations of central Mexico. However, evidence shows that native peoples incorporated Catholicism into their religious beliefs on their own terms, and continued to make sacrifices to their traditional deities. In particular the deities of rain (Tlaloc and Dzahui) and the fertility of the soil (Xipe Totec) continued to be important following the conquest and the beginning of the so-called spiritual conquest. This study examines visual evidence of the persistence of traditional religious practices, including embedded pre-hispanic stones placed in churches and convents, and pre-hispanic iconography in what ostensibly were Christian murals.

When the pandemic hit in early 2020, baseball's minor leagues cancelled their seasons. A few independent leagues tried abbreviated schedules, but all Major League affiliates shut down--for the first time in more than 120 years. Since then, Major League Baseball has taken over governance of the minors, and leagues and teams have been eliminated. In its fourth and final edition, this book gives a complete accounting of the minor leagues as they were known from the late 19th century through 2019.
