Great Power Competition and Order Building in the Indo-Pacific
This book argues that the new great power contest between the United States and the People’s Republic of China, which has as its epicentre the complex Indo-Pacific region, is having a detrimental impact on the region’s existing order system. Analysing why the great powers are increasingly at loggerheads, the manifold risks this entails, and how the various stakeholders in the Indo-Pacific can find a durable regional order more constructive than confrontational, the book, avoiding theory, proposes a new equilibrium based on practical ways to manage burgeoning conflict and maintain order and stability by compartmentalising problems and challenges while seeking to maintain a balance among stakeholder interests.
International Engagement in China's Human Rights
Since the Tiananmen Square incident in 1989 there has been increasing international pressure on China to improve its approach to human rights, whilst at the same time the Chinese government has itself realised that it needs to improve its approach, and has indeed done much to implement improvements. This book explores systematically the international engagement in human rights in China and assesses the impact of such foreign involvement. It looks at particular areas including criminal justice, labour, and religious freedom, considers the processes by which international pressure is brought to bear and the processes by which improvements are implemented in China, and concludes that, whilst China’s human rights record has improved more than many people realise, further improvements are still needed.

Legal Reform Versus the Power of the Party and State in the People's Republic of China
"This is a case-based approach to the construction of a rule-of-law society with Chinese characteristics by the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) in an attempt to build up its political legitimacy and to fulfil its nationalistic goal to develop China into a modern state. Based on a careful analysis of policy documents, jurisprudence and interview data on legal developments in contemporary China, the study reveals the distinctive place of 'law' and its close relationship to ideology in CCP led system, and concludes that the current legal construction, albeit not fully in compliance with Western conception of rule of law, is a legal-rational process aimed to modernise the Party-state and society."--BOOK JACKET.
