As such, questions about madness circulate around the place of madness across historical, cultural, and social boundaries. Regardless of the place that madness assumes in our world, madness can be understood as having the potential to liberate individuals from a society of control. Because madness can be understood not merely as one end of the binary of reason and unreason but as a form of art that allows us to transcend reason, it provides us with the ultimate liberation: to accept, know and understand the possibilities of a multiplicity of meanings and senses beyond reason, beyond the commonsense. And with such liberation, we gain the power not only to change our own lives, but society as a whole.
New Perspectives in Diasporic Experience
This volume was first published by Inter-Disciplinary Press in 2014. Taking a transcultural and interdisciplinary approach to Diaspora studies, New Perspectives in Diasporic Experience offers a wide range of new and challenging perspectives on Diaspora and confirms the relevance of this field to the discussion of contemporary forms of identity construction, movement, settlement, membership and collective identification. This volume investigates constructions of diasporic identity from a variety of temporal and spatial contexts. They explore encounters between diasporic communities and host societies, and examine how diasporic experiences can contribute to perpetuating or challenging normalised perceptions of the Other. The authors discuss how visual and literary representations become an integral part of diasporic experiences and identities. Other themes examined include communities’ attempts to reverse the negative effects of Diaspora and maintain cultural continuity, as well as generational differences and dialogue within the Diaspora, and the power that individuals have to negotiate marginal identities in diasporic settings.

The Cultural Heritage of Psychiatry and Its Literary Transformations
This volume investigates the role of English, British, Irish, American, Canadian and Nigerian anglophone literary conceptualizations of mental and social distress, its diagnosis and treatment as transformative parts of the cultural heritage of psychiatry. Demonstrating that the history of psychiatry is not a narrative of unbridled, unequivocal progress, the volume explores how literary texts negotiate and critique dominant and alternative forms and traditions of treatment and care, how they challenge the medicalization of non-normative thoughts and behaviour and how they bear witness to and fragmentarily retrieve and imagine suppressed voices, thereby producing counter-cultural memories.
Gender in Lehre und Didaktik
Zur Internationalen Erfurter Konferenz trafen sich Hochschuldozentinnen aus sechs Ländern. Dabei ging es um die Implementierung von Gender Studien, um Vernetzung, Interdisziplinarität und vor allem um die Erarbeitung von didaktisch-methodischen Konzepten. Folgende Fragen wurden diskutiert: Welche Ziele werden mit Gender Studien verbunden? Wie kann Geschlechterbewusstsein in Lehre oder Training geweckt werden? Welche guten didaktischen Beispiele gibt es? Welche Medien werden eingesetzt? University lecturers from six countries met at the international Erfurt conference. The focus was on the implementation of gender studies, networking and the development of didactic concepts, as there is a great need in this discipline for didactic and methodological clarification. Topics discussed were: What is the goal of gender studies? How can gender awareness be raised in teaching or training situations? What good didactic examples exist already? How can New Media be implemented?
The Sense and Sensibility of Madness
This volume explores the intriguing ontological ambiguities of madness in literature and the arts. Despite its association with a diseased/abnormal mind, there can be much sense and sensibility in madness. Daring to break free from the dictates of normalcy, madwomen and madmen disrupt the status quo. Yet, as they venture into unchartered or prohibited terrain, they may also unleash the liberatory and transformative potential of unrestrained madness.
