Central Asia is a region singularly marked by attempts to transform social life by transforming place. Drawing together established scholars and a new generation of historians, geographers and anthropologists, this volume brings empirical specificity and theoretical depth to debates about the politics of place-making in this diverse region, making an important contribution to Central Asian studies and a distinctive regional comparison to the ‘spatial turn’ in social analysis. Case studies draw on archival research and oral history to explore the workings—and unintended consequences—of policies aimed at sedentarizing, collectivizing and resettling populations as a means to fix and ter...

An in-depth look at Ukraine’s attempts to shape how it is perceived by the rest of the world. During times of crisis, competing narratives are often advanced to define what is happening, and the stakes of information management by nations are high. In this timely book, Göran Bolin and Per Ståhlberg examine the fraught intersection of state politics, corporate business, and civil activism to understand the dynamics and importance of meaning management in Ukraine. Drawing on fieldwork inside the country, the authors discuss the forms, agents, and platforms within the complex political and communicative situation and how each articulated and acted upon perceptions of the propaganda threat. ...

Medieval Translatio

The interdisciplinary papers in this volume focus on the translation of texts in its broadest meaning. The contributors represent Latin, Slavic, English and Scandinavian philologies and deal with very different aspects of translation as for example ‘The Aftermath of the Norman Conquest’, ‘Re-writing parts of Europe in vernacular adaptations of the Imago Mundi’, ‘Translating A Philosophical Style’, ‘The Hermeneutics of Animal Voices in Early Medieval England’, ‘Vernacular Literary Cultures in the Latin West’, ‘Latin, Medieval Cosmopolitanism, and the Dynamics of Untranslatability’, ‘Non-Autonomy of South Slavic Metaphrastic Translation’, and ‘Alexander and the Ars Dictaminis’. It is the aim of all contributions as well as the whole volume to demonstrate the importance of translation in the Middle Ages as a means of not only linguistic transfer but also of a transfer of culture and knowledge.

Karolina

Berättelsen om Karolina är ett stycke svensk kvinnohistoria. Karolina föddes i Stockholm 1870 med okända föräldrar och växte upp i ett fosterhem i Uppland. Vid sekelskiftet var hon husjungfru i Stockholm. Hon blev socialdemokratisk kommunalpolitiker i Nynäshamn och var under några år ledamot av skolrådet. Hon dog i Nynäshamn 1937. När hon dog hade hon gått från att vara okänd till att vara en lokal kändis. Nynäshamnsposten avslutade sin nekrolog med orden: ”Må hela Nynäshamns Karolina vila i frid.” Karolinas liv innehåller många spännande detaljer och speglar utvecklingen för kvinnor i Sverige under den senare delen av artonhundratalet och början av nittonhundratalet.
