This book discusses theoretical predictions and their comparison with experiments of extended and modified classical and quantum theories of gravity. The goal is to provide a readable access and broad overview over different approaches to the topic to graduate and PhD students as well as to young researchers. The book presents both, theoretical and experimental insights and is structured in three parts. The first addresses the theoretical models beyond special and general relativity such as string theory, Poincare gauge theory and teleparallelism as well as Finsler gravity. In turn, the second part is focused on the observational effects that these models generate, accounting for tests and comparisons which can be made on all possible scales: from the universe as a whole via binary systems, stars, black holes, satellite experiments, down to laboratory experiments at micrometer and smaller scales. The last part of this book is dedicated to quantum systems and gravity, showing tests of classical gravity with quantum systems, and coupling of quantum matter and gravity.
Winner of the Competition “Prize for PhD Thesis 2023” arranged by Sapienza University Press. Black holes are the most compact objects in the Universe. According to general relativity, black holes have a horizon that hides a singularity where Einstein’s theory breaks down. Recently, gravitational waves have opened the possibility of probing the existence of horizons and investigating the nature of compact objects. This is particularly interesting given some quantum-gravity models which predict the presence of horizonless and singularity-free compact objects. This thesis derives the gravitational-wave signal emitted by horizonless compact objects for model-independent tests of the black hole paradigm.
Modern Methods in the Analysis and Structural Elucidation of Mycotoxins presents available methods of analysis and structural elucidation of mycotoxins by recognized experts in the various disciplines. The approach in each chapter of the book is to present each method initially in theoretical terms and then to review the method as it specifically applies to the analysis and/or structural elucidation of mycotoxins. Comprised of 15 chapters, the book's opening chapters deal with screening, sampling, and survey methods for mycotoxins and toxigenic fungi. This is followed by chapters dealing mostly with methods for structural elucidation, such as NMR and X-ray crystallography and IR and UV spectroscopy, as well as biosynthetic techniques. Significant chapters consider the analytical methods for mycotoxin analyses, including enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay system and tandem mass spectrometry. The concluding chapter examines the mycotoxin analytical problem in taxonomic or ecological terms. The three volumes of the proceedings of MG15 give a broad view of all aspects of gravitational physics and astrophysics, from mathematical issues to recent observations and experiments. The scientific program of the meeting included 40 morning plenary talks over 6 days, 5 evening popular talks and nearly 100 parallel sessions on 71 topics spread over 4 afternoons. This handbook provides an updated comprehensive description of gravitational wave astronomy. In the first part, it reviews gravitational wave experiments, from ground and space based laser interferometers to pulsar timing arrays and indirect detection from the cosmic microwave background. In the second part, it discusses a number of astrophysical and cosmological gravitational wave sources, including black holes, neutron stars, possible more exotic objects, and sources in the early Universe. The third part of the book reviews the methods to calculate gravitational waveforms. The fourth and last part of the book covers techniques employed in gravitational wave astronomy data analysis. This book represents both a valuable resource for graduate students and an important reference for researchers in gravitational wave astronomy.
The essays collected in this volume were written over the last twenty or so years and were all originally published (with one exception) in a variety of journals and edited collections. The topics covered range from contemporary Native American literature to war literature and cinema, from the revisionist Western film to the prose of Ralph Waldo Emerson and other writers who struggled to think of peace as something different from the peace that can be safeguarded by an unending preparedness for war. As a whole, this book attempts to gauge to what extent both film and narrative can point in the direction of that “one step beyond the hero” which Emerson (in his early years) saw as necessary to becoming true peace fighters. Though “One Step Beyond the Hero” shows how difficult it is to imagine (let alone realize) a world free of violence, brutality, and coercion, its goal is not to undermine the Utopian desire for a non-violent future. On the contrary, by calling attention to how writers and filmmakers deal with both violence and war, this study engages in a critical scrutiny of culture based on the notion that peace should be another word for justice.

Integral abutment bridges are bridges characterised by a monolithic connection between the deck and the abutments. Therefore, their behaviour during a seismic event is controlled by the interaction of the entire structure with the surrounding soil, and markedly with the approach embankment. Despite becoming a popular design due to low maintenance requirements, seismic design procedures still face uncertainties due to limited understanding of the dynamic soil-structure response.
