The Troubling State of India's Democracy

As India’s power and prominence rise on the international stage, its longstanding tradition of democracy is under threat. Since establishing a secular and democratic constitution in 1950, India has held elections at the local, state, and national levels with frequent transitions of power between opposing parties. This commitment to democracy has provided political order to a country that is twice the size of Europe and with a stunning array of social and economic divides. Despite this rich tradition, India’s democracy faces an unprecedented threat with the rise of Narendra Modi and his Hindu nationalist party, the Bharatiya Janata Party. After decisively winning general elections in 2014...

Political Parties and the Crisis of Democracy

Democracy is in decline and the share of world's population living in freedom under democratic government has decreased considerably as authoritarian practices proliferate. Surprisingly, most of the analyses that study these developments give little attention to the role of political parties in the decline of democracy although there is a broad consensus about the relevance of political parties for the functioning of democracy. How parties can contribute to democracy is best understood by looking at a very diverse range of cases in different parts of the world. Instead of taking a regional approach which dominates the literature on political parties, this volume takes a global perspective. I...

Electoral Practice and the Election Commission of India

The book offers an insight into the contribution of Election Commission to the Indian democratic process through its regulatory role in conducting elections between 1990 and 2019. It elaborates upon its interactions with pivotal state institutions - the Parliament, Supreme Court, and political parties - to streamline democratic procedures during this period. It demonstrates a comparison between important electoral procedures in India and other liberal democracies (the Canada, US, UK, South Africa among others) to highlight the role of electoral institutions in democratisation. It also studies the socio-political situatedness of the Election Commission as a body that moulds the political culture in India.

  • Categories: Law

Money in essential for electoral politics yet its use and abuse often raises problems of graft, corruption, and cronyism. To throw new light on these challenges, this book addresses three questions: what types of public policies are commonly used around the world to regulate the role of money in politics? What triggers landmark reforms in political finance? And, 'what works, ' what fails, and why - when countries reform regulations? Checkbook Elections? compares a diverse range of affluent societies and long-established democracies such as Sweden, Britain and the United States, as well as emerging economies such as Russia, South Africa, India, and Brazil

Globalization, Development and The State

"This book presents the story of how India and Brazil have managed the challenges of economic globalization since 1990. Using an innovative combination of theories of developmental states with theories on the changing nature of global capitalism, the analysis presented here explains how India and Brazil have successfully managed those challenges that the opening of their economies has introduced, and their different degrees of success. The key to their economic performance lies in the establishment of new and more intensive forms of business-state collaboration, which ensures that policy initiatives have progressively been adapted to the interests and capabilities of the domestic business class. The analysis points to a new theoretical perspective on developmental states. In an increasingly knowledge-intensive global economy, developmental states acquire new forms that are more collaborative and democratic in contrast to earlier authoritarian states. They also need strong inputs of an intellectual nature making authoritarian solutions less likely to succeed." -- Book cover.
