Ordoliberalism, Law and the Rule of Economics

  • Categories: Law

Ordoliberalism is a theoretical and cultural tradition of significant societal and political impact in post-war Germany. For a long time the theory was only known outside Germany by a handful of experts, but ordoliberalism has now moved centre stage after the advent of the financial crisis, and has become widely perceived as the ideational source of Germany's crisis politics. In this collection, the contributors engage in a multi-faceted exploration of the conceptual history of ordoliberalism, the premises of its founding fathers in law and economics, its religious underpinnings, the debates over its theoretical assumptions and political commitments, and its formative vision of societal orde...

Luigi Einaudi, the Father of the 'Fathers of Europe'

Luigi Einaudi produced an extensive series of writings dedicated to European federation spanning from 1897 to 1959. In these works, he designs the policies and the institutions of European federation, anticipating the future developments of the European integration process. Several of his proposals are now embedded in the various treaties which have landmarked the history of uniting Europe. However, a number of other proposals have yet to be realised, and could represent a source of inspiration in designing the future of the EU. Einaudi is shown here to be the architect of what we call today the European Union, however no historian, economist or politician has previously recognised the fundamental role of Einaudi. This lack of recognition can be extended to Eurotower bankers, whose unconventional monetary policy has drawn so much from Einaudi’s theory of financial stability.

The First Socialization Debate (1918) and Early Efforts Towards Socialization

This book discusses the 1918 European socialization debate, its consequences, and its relevance a century later. Following the end of the First World War, the disastrous social and economic situation facing Europe led to calls for socialization of central economic sectors, as well as measures for the improvement of work conditions and social security. This book rekindles the debate, presenting the basic issues of socialization from different European countries and taking into account current developments. The chapters track the socialism debate in Europe from its initial inception in 1918 and examine the ways in which it has shaped the public discourse in the years following, drawing theoretical connections between the conditions that created the environment for the debate to begin and contemporary social and political trends. This book will be of particular interest to graduate students and researchers of socioeconomics, ethics, the history of economic thought, history, and political science.

Economics from the Outside in

Economics from the Outside in

Nobel laureate in economics James Buchanan has been called--and indeed, calls himself--an outsider in American economics. Original and even unorthodox in his pioneering contributions to public choice theory and variously revered or berated for his influence on the economic policies that took hold in the Reagan years, he has stimulated a productive vein of economic inquiry and an important strain of public policy. First published in 1992 under the title Better Than Plowing And Other Personal Essays, this collection of autobiographic writings was hailed as engaging, honest, and fascinating. The four new chapters of the present volume fill some gaps in his earlier reflections and add valuable assessments of the roots of his academic work. Economics from the Outside In provides a fascinating look at the humble origins and academic development of a recipient of the Nobel Prize, the intellectual underpinnings of a key American economic policy, and the role of the academician in today's society.
