Shipboard diary of John Toon is made up of several parts. [Toon's] journey on the 'Kent' from Gravesend, England to Melbourne, Australia is dated 3 June, 1852. Ownership inscription on fly-leaf: "F.J. Smith, 38 Windsor Crescent, Surrey Hills". Toon's diary covers the various events aboard the ship, including the death of a child to measles. The second component of the diary consists of two indexes, recording newspapers and letters received from England as well as those sent back. Third component of diary are various poems by Lucy, 1844 -- Frederick John Smith's small diary is in two parts. Written when he was 14 years old (1903-1904) as an apprentice on board the Barque "CJS". Included is Frederick John Smith's postcard album, containing numerous images of his travels to Mauritius, Mozambique, Colombo, Burma, Shanghai, Yokohama, Singapore, Hong Kong, Victoria, Tasmania, Western Australia. Postcards include inscriptions to his mother and brother.
