Femtosecond Technology for Technical and Medical Applications
A comprehensive overview of the principles and applications of femtosecond lasers, especially applied to medicine and to production technology. The advantages and problems of ultrashort laser pulses are discussed in more detail in the context of applications in the micro-machining of technical materials such as drilling, surface structuring and cutting, in medical use like dental, ophthalmologic, neurological and otolaryngological applications, in metrology, and in the generation of x-rays. Safety aspects are also considered.
Non-equilibrium Dynamics of Lipid Bilayers
The main goal of this thesis was to extend and apply time resolved x-ray scattering experiments at in-house, synchrotron and free electron laser sources to soft matter sample systems, in particular aligned lipid multilayers on solid support. A special emphasis was placed on a characterization of the non-equilibrium fast time response of the multilamellar stack to shortly pulsed optical excitation as well as the acousto-electric field accompanying a surface acoustic wave (SAW). In addition to fundamental questions associated with non-equilibrium dynamics of soft matter films such as driven membrane undulations, this thesis addresses technological challenges of time resolved x-ray diffraction, in particular concerning the timing scheme that has been implemented at the synchrotron storage ring Petra III, DESY, Hamburg. Importantly, a conceptually new pulse resolved x-ray detection scheme, well exceeding the performance of present detector concepts, has been developed and is described in detail.
Entwicklung von Modellen zur speichergestützten Versorgung mit regenerativen Energien in Inselnetzen
Dass regenerativ betriebene Inselsysteme mit Speichern unter bestimmten Voraussetzungen wirtschaftlich sind, zeigt die hier vorgestellte Methode zur Auslegung von regenerativ betriebenen Versorgungssystemen als Inselnetz unter Verwendung von Energiespeichern auf der Basis von statistischen Modellen. Das Versorgungssystem wurde mithilfe von Kostenmodellen und mittels Optimierungssoftware ausgelegt. Die Validierung wurde anhand von Messungen aus zwei realen Versorgungsgebieten vorgenommen. - The proposed method for the configuration of renewably powered energy supply systems as isolated grids backed by energy storage technology and based on statistical models shows the economic viability of such a system. The energy supply system was configured by implementing cost models using an optimization software. Validation was achieved through comparison with measurements taken from two different existing energy supply areas.
