Cultural Practices and Identity Politics in Manipur

This compendium of ten essays earlier published in the quarterly journal Alternative Perspectives is an attempt to evaluate conventional understanding of identity, culture and resistance, and at the same time, present some key underlying arguments in a comprehensive form. This volume consists of three different themes which are closely interrelated. The first theme on identity deals with the assertion of discomfort against the politics of homogenising articulation of identity and the oversimplification of gender issues on the pretext of women being a celebrated identity within our constructed sensibilities. The chapters on economy as the second theme of this volume examine underdevelopment of Manipur’s economy and its ramifications and corelation with the above mentioned issues. The essays of the last theme on resistance underscore the forms of protest which are arguably belittled within the purview of the all pervasive armed conflict and its diverse narratives.

India's Postcolonial Hinterlands

This volume offers an insightful and compelling exploration of the complex dynamics that define governance, identity and power in India’s Northeast. It challenges conventional post-colonial narratives by asserting that the departure of colonial rulers did not precipitate a clean break but instead initiated intricate continuities that continue to shape the region’s societal structures. It puts forward the concept of ‘postcolonial hinterlands’, a nuanced framework for understanding spaces and identities that lie outside dominant national constructs in post-colonial settings. It highlights how the interactions in this framework between marginalized identities and the entrenched nation-state model create a unique emplaced space that forms the basis for the volume’s broader inquiries. The volume will be of great interest to scholars and researchers of politics, post-colonial polities, postcolonialism, and South Asian studies.

Indigeneity, Development and Sustainability

This volume presents cutting-edge research on India's Northeast region relating to borders, material mobilities, contested identities, and economic and political dynamics. It offers a comprehensive understanding of the developmental challenges currently faced by Northeast India, including the complexities of the labor market and the neoliberal economy. The book highlights the lived experiences of individuals in varied geographies and perspectives. It is organized into five sections, each addressing the region's old and vexed questions of 'development', and its complicated relationship with indigeneity and sustainability. Contributions from scholars of various disciplines provide an all-inclusive picture of the region, ranging from a macro to a micro level. Interdisciplinary in nature, the book interests a cross-section of academics and graduate students from different disciplines, including sociology, social anthropology, economics, political science, human geography, history, public policy, and development studies.

This edited volume brings together authors from a wide variety of disciplines in the social sciences and humanities. A historian first investigates understudied samizdat literature, a film critic then analyzes Balkan cinema via psychoanalysis, a psychologist examines contemporary European border policies, and a political scientist analyzes the Confederate-memorial debate. Philosophers consider the space of those memorials, ethno-national narratives in India, the Anthropocene and the mind’s historical imaginary, and the notion of home. Literary critics examine recent developments in modes of storytelling and images of Orientalism. What emerges is a new understanding of history, memory, and time.

But I Am One of You

The ideas of who belongs and who does not, who is an insider and who is an outsider have sparked severe friction in Northeast India for decades now. From the frequent characterization of Bengal-origin Muslims in Assam as illegal Bangladeshi immigrants to the ethnic battles between the Meiteis and Kuki-Zo tribals of Manipur, from the Naga and Mizo separatist insurgencies to the prejudice the tribal minorities face in the mainland--negotiating identity has always been a complex issue. In recent years the National Register of Citizens and the Citizenship Amendment Act have added to that complexity. Amidst sweeping political and social changes in the Northeast and the rest of the country, have t...

Regional perspectives on India's Partition

This book expands the scope of understanding of the vast, albeit uneven, experience of the 1947 Partition of India by including localities and life stories from and beyond the regions of Punjab and Bengal. Regions discussed include the Chitmahals, Assam, Tripura, Mizoram, Hyderabad, Andaman Islands, and Jammu and Kashmir. The contributors show that the heterogeneity of people’s experiences reside in spaces of the family, home, neighbourhoods, villages, towns and cities refugee settlements, letters, memoir...
