Carlsbad

Once a small coastal community known for avocados and flower fields, Carlsbad has grown into a sprawling suburban city, with a small beach-town feel that still maintains ties to its roots. The discovery of its mineral wells in 1885, and the subsequent naming of the city after the famed European spa in Karlsbad, Bohemia, put Carlsbad on the map as a world-class resort destination. Miles of beautiful beaches, and three lagoons located within its boundaries, have shaped Carlsbad into a recreational destination as well. The Flower Fields, with vibrant rows of colorful ranunculus, now serves as a reminder of the past and a link to the future, as shopping and businesses have grown up around them, helping Carlsbad evolve into the diverse, progressive city it is today.

Legendary Locals of Carlsbad

A collision of cultures in a seaside resort community, Carlsbad sits on a seven-mile stretch of white-sands beach idyllically located on the Pacific coast of north county San Diego. The idea of Carlsbad began in the late 1880s when two small groups of entrepreneurs ascended, simultaneously, from both the north and the south. The first group discovered natural mineral springs, which they promoted to tourists as having healing powers. As a result, the town became a very popular resting point for the rich and famous when traveling by train from Los Angeles to the famed Del Mar horse races. Subsequently, the Mexican Revolution began to the south and drove a second group of visionaries to Carlsbad. Thus, the quaint downtown area, known as the Village, was created along with a vibrant Barrio. Incorporated in 1952, Carlsbad remains, today, a tight-knit community of multigenerational and uniquely talented locals.

Painting the Sublime

In the second half of the eighteenth century, the category of the sublime became a central concept of the fledgling field of aesthetics. Originally located at the margins of discourses on rhetoric, it became a source of fascination in literary and artistic production, but quickly proved to be a complicated matter, especially for the visual arts. Artists and philosophers contended with the question of whether the sublime can be depicted at all or whether the events that can cause viewers to experience the sublime can be adequately represented in painting. The contributions of this special issue suggest, however, that the contested visual representability of the sublime might have spurred visual artists to devise innovative, experimental solutions in the eighteenth and nineteenth century.
