Neurological Outcomes in Preterm Infants – Current Controversies and Therapies for Brain Injury
Preterm birth affects over 15 million newborns worldwide each year and is the main contributor of neonatal mortality and morbidity. While neonatal survival following preterm birth continues to improve, this has not been matched by a decline in neurological outcome. There is still a high prevalence of motor problems, executive dysfunction, and cognitive impairment in infants born preterm. Improved neuroimaging has helped to describe different types of neonatal brain injuries in this population and has given a better understanding of underlying pathogenesis. However, therapies are still lacking and there is a great need to find novel strategies to improve injury and functional outcome.
Multiscale Entropy Approaches and Their Applications
Multiscale entropy (MSE) measures to evaluate the complexity of time series by taking into account the multiple time scales in physical systems were proposed in the early 2000s. Since then, these approaches have received a great deal of attention and have been used in a wide range of applications. Multivariate approaches have also been developed. The meeting was held in historic Philadelphia, USA, on the campus of the University of Pennsylvania from August 11 to 15, 2001. In 1772 in Uppsala the Swedish chemist Karl Wilhelm Scheele discovered the element Oxygen. Two hundred and one years later, in 1973, the International Society on Oxygen Transport to Tissue (ISOTT) was founded. Since then there has been an annual ISOTT meeting. After 24 years of international ISOTT meetings it was decided, at the 2005 summit in Bary, Italy, that the 2007 meeting was to be held in Uppsala, Sweden.
