The Many Worlds of Anglophone Literature
On what terms and concepts can we ground the comparative study of Anglophone literatures and cultures around the world today? What, if anything, unites the novels of Witi Ihimaera, the speculative fiction of Nnedi Okorafor, the life-writings by Stuart Hall, and the emerging Anglophone Arab literature by writers like Omar Robert Hamilton? This volume explores the globality of Anglophone fiction both as a conceptual framing and as a literary imaginary. It highlights the diversity of lives and worlds represented in Anglophone writing, as well as the diverse imaginations of transnational and planetary connections articulated in it. Featuring a variety of internationally renowned scholars, this book thinks through Anglophone literature not merely as a crippling legacy of colonial rule, or as exoticizing commodity in a global literary marketplace, but as an inherently transcultural literary medium that facilitates the articulation of divergent experiences of modernity and the critique of hierarchies and inequalities within, among, and beyond post-colonial societies.
Literature and Mnemonic Migration
This book deals with mnemonic migration understood as the movement of memories across linguistic, cultural and mnemonic borders via the medium of literature. In contemporary literature, there is a growing number of authors with migration experience, some of whom write not in native tongue, but in their second or third language and who represent their experience of migration as encounter of different historical memories. When migrating to a new place, people enter not only a new political and cultural structure, but also a new framework of memory. They need to adjust their historical imaginaries, thereby also contesting and expanding the framework they enter. The volume explores how contemporary literature addresses specific historical legacies, juxtaposes them multidirectionally and disseminates them in original and through translation in different parts of the world and in various social contexts. Furthermore, this volume traces literature’s role in the processes of memory circulation, translation and reception from the interdisciplinary perspectives of cultural memory studies, translation studies, reception studies and the studies of migrant and multilingual literature.

Regions of Memory
“Regions of memory” are a scale of social and cultural memory that reaches above the national, yet remains narrower than the global or universal. The chapters of this volume analyze transnational constellations of memory across and between several geographical areas, exploring historical, political and cultural interactions between societies. Such a perspective enables a more diverse field of possible comparisons in memory studies, studying a variety of global memory regions in parallel. Moreover, it reveals lesser-known vectors and mechanisms of memory travel, such as across Cold War battle lines, across the Indian Ocean, or between Southeast Asia and western Europe. Outsourcing the European Past
This book investigates the entanglement of memory and morality in an extended case study of the memory policy of the European Commission between 2014 and 2020. The main empirical aim is to provide an understanding of how the European Commission, various non-governmental intermediary institutions (including the Memory Studies Association and Euroclio) and, in the end, participants in policy projects, attribute meaning to the past and connect that past with specific norms and values. The book queries how the European Commission turns more general cultural memories into concrete moral discourses in its memory policy; how these policies are institutionally operationalised; what draws these institutions to the European Commission’s memory policy; and what happens when individual citizens are exposed to the outcomes of those policy projects. Theoretically, Outsourcing the European Past integrates theories from cultural sociology, political science, cultural studies and sociolinguistics in an innovative theory of memory.
Carnivalizing Reconciliation
Transitional justice and national inquiries may be the most established means for coming to terms with traumatic legacies, but it is in the more subtle social and cultural processes of “memory work” that the pitfalls and promises of reconciliation are laid bare. This book analyzes, within the realms of literature and film, recent Australian and Canadian attempts to reconcile with Indigenous populations in the wake of forced child removal. As Hanna Teichler demonstrates, their systematic emphasis on the subjectivity of the victim is problematic, reproducing simplistic narratives and identities defined by victimization. Such fictions of reconciliation venture beyond simplistic narratives and identities defined by victimization, offering new opportunities for confronting painful histories.
