Cognitive Aspects of Language Use
The papers collected in this volume consist of the contributions presented at the Second Israeli Cognitive Symposium, held at Tel Aviv University, April 1-4, 1986. The biannual Israeli Cognitive Symposia are organized by the Tel Aviv University Cognitive Studies Working Group, consisting of linguists, psychologists, poeticians and philosophers. The research focus of this working group is on cognitive studies of language use.
The Suspense of Horror and the Horror of Suspense
This book presents a detailed academic study of suspense building in Stephen King’s horror novels The Shining and Carrie and their respective film adaptations. Two film versions of each book are taken into consideration – one released immediately after the novel publication and one that appeared decades later. After providing a general idea of what suspense as a phenomenon related to fiction is, the study establishes some repeated plot-bound suspense motifs and episodes in the literary works, and traces their development in the films in order to demonstrate the similarities and differences in the techniques of achieving suspense in literature and in cinema. The model detailed here can also be used for individual or comparative suspense analysis of other literary or cinematic works.
The Concept of Defense Mechanisms in Contemporary Psychology
What is the scientific status and the "truth value" of the concept of defense mechanisms? Among contemporary psychologists, three types of answers to this question may be expected. Some would wholeheartedly endorse the theoretical, clinical, and research value of this notion; others would reject it outright. Between these two extremes, a large number of observers, perhaps the majority, would suspend their judgment. Their attitude, compounded of hope and doubt, would capitalize on defense as an interesting and promising concept. Defense Mechanisms
The book is focused on defense mechanisms as theoretical constructs as well as the possibilities of their empirical registration by different methods, and the application of these constructs in different fields of psychology with special regard to concurrent and predictive validity. It is argued that defense mechanisms are in many ways to be seen as integrative constructs, not necessarily restricted to psychoanalytic theory and that the potential fields of their application have a wide ranging scope, comprising many fields of psychology. Consequently empirical studies are presented from the fields of clinical and personality psychology, psychotherapy research and psychosomatic phenomena and diseases.
