My Life in Germany Before and After January 30, 1933

Pt. 1 (pp. 1-30) contains the editors' introduction. The collection consists of 263 files containing the memoirs of ca. 230 people who lived in Germany or Austria during the 1930s. Most of the entries were written during the period August 1939-April 1940 in response to an essay contest sponsored by three Harvard professors (one of them was Gordon Allport). The memoirists were Jews, part-Jews, and Christians. The introduction examines various themes in the memoirs, such as identity conflict, persecution and flight, professional occupation, women as memoirists. Pt. 2 (pp. 31-124) contains the catalogue; each entry gives basic biographical information on the memoirist and a synopsis of the content of the memoir.

The Policies and Power of Public Diplomacy

This volume examines the higher-level discussions convened at Wilton Park, the UK’s Foreign Commonwealth and Development Office’s policy forum, since its inception in 1946. Originally a ‘re-education’ camp after World War II in the principles and practice of democracy, Wilton Park has evolved into a first-class international policy forum and UK soft power asset working in more than 50 countries. Over the decades, senior decision-makers and opinion formers from around the world have advanced and shaped thinking and policies on global issues, including building post-war Germany, transatlantic security, East-West relations, the transition from apartheid in South Africa, the UK’s relat...

"A Third Reich, as I See It"

With the beginning of the National Socialist dictatorship, Germany not only experienced a deep political turning point but the private life of Germans also changed fundamentally. The Nazi regime had far-reaching ideas about how the individual should think and act. In " A Third Reich, as I See It" Janosch Steuwer examines the private diaries of ordinary Germans written between 1933 and 1939 and shows how average citizens reacted to the challenges of National Socialism. Some felt the urge and desire to adapt to the political circumstances. Others felt compelled to do so. They all contributed to the realization of the vision of a homogeneous, conflict-free, and "racially pure" society. In a detailed manner and with a convincing sense of the bigger picture, Steuwer shows how the tense efforts of people to fit in, and at the same time to preserve existing opinions and self-conceptions, led to a close intertwining of the private and the political. " A Third Reich, as I See It" offers a surprisingly new look at how the ideological visions of National Socialism found their way into the everyday reality of Germans.

Originally published in 1991 this study analyses the Bavarian monarchist movement and its place in the relations between Bavaria and the Reich during the Weimar era, with particular emphasis on the period up to 1929. Focusing on Bavaria’s peculiar historical position in the Reich as a staunch adversary of strong national political authority, the study has been anchored insofar as possible in local-level organizational and governmental archival sources. It makes extensive use of organizational and personal case-studies.
