Against the odds, monarchies flourished in nineteenth-century Europe. In an era marked by dramatic change and revolutionary upheaval, Europe's monarchies experienced an unexpected late flowering. Royal Heirs focuses on the roles and personalities of the heirs to the throne from more than a dozen different dynasties that ruled the continent between the French Revolution and the end of the First World War. The book explores how these individuals contributed to the remarkable survival of the crowns they were born to wear. Constitutions, family relationships, education, politics, the media, the need to generate 'soft power' and the militarisation of monarchy all shaped the lives of princes and princesses while they were playing their part to embody and secure the future of monarchy. Ranging from Norway to Spain and from Greece to Britain, Royal Heirs not only paints a vivid picture of a monarchical age, but also explores how such disparate monarchies succeeded in adapting to change and defending their position.

Kaiser Wilhelm I. und seine Deutung der Befreiungskriege
Studienarbeit aus dem Jahr 2015 im Fachbereich Geschichte Deutschlands - 1848, Kaiserreich, Imperialismus, Note: 1,3, Albert-Ludwigs-Universität Freiburg (Historisches Seminar), Veranstaltung: Hauptseminar: Die Befreiungskriege – Fakten und Fiktionen in Preußen und Europa 1813-1913, Sprache: Deutsch, Abstract: Diese Hausarbeit beschäftigt sich mit der Deutung der Befreiungskriege 1813-1815 aus Sicht Kaiser Wilhelms I. Dieser nahm als junger Mann selbst am Befreiungskampf gegen Napoleon teil und hat sich in seinem Leben immer wieder auf diese Erfahrungen berufen. Im Fokus stehen drei Aspekte der Wahrnehmung: Erstens Napoleon, zweitens die Rolle der preußischen Armee und drittens die Rolle der Eltern, also des preußischen Königs Friedrich Wilhelms III. und der Königin Luise. Die Wahrnehmung der Befreiungskriege durch Wilhelm I. ist deshalb äußerst aufschlussreich, weil der erste Kaiser des zweiten Deutschen Reiches zu den wichtigsten Persönlichkeiten des 19. Jahrhunderts gehörte und seine Handlungen die Geschichte entscheidend beeinflussten.

Freiheit, Ungleichheit, Selbstsucht?
Es dürfte wohl keinen zweiten deutschen Autor geben, dem so viele verschiedene, sich gegenseitig ausschließende politische Grundeinstellungen zugeschrieben werden. Einige Forscher halten Fontane für einen rückwärtsgewandten Konservativen, andere erklären ihn zum Liberalen, zum Demokraten oder gar zum frühen Sozialisten. Am Beispiel von Fontanes Einstellung zu Großbritannien zeigt diese Studie, daß man zu neuen, überraschenden Ergebnissen kommt, wenn man Fontanes Texte vor ihrem geistesgeschichtlichen Entstehungshintergrund interpretiert. Eine ausführliche Analyse von vier Romanen veranschaulicht, wie sich die Auseinandersetzung mit dem Inselreich im Werk niedergeschlagen hat. Auch hierbei rundet sich das Persönlichkeitsbild des heute immer noch Rätsel aufgebenden politischen Menschen Fontane.
A History of the European Restorations
Europe's Restorations were characterised by their evolving dialectics. The chapters in this first volume address the key questions and controversies of Napoleonic history from a national and international perspective. From the re-ordering of the European world through the tools of intervention, occupation and diplomacy, to the creation of new constitutional monarchies across France, Scandinavia and Germany the volume outlines the processes that realigned national priorities and the accompanying dynamics of social and political identity. In a structure that makes sense of what Luigi Mascilli Migliorini describes as the 'fiendishly complex' process of reconstructing order in post-Napoleonic Europe, this collection of essays brings together experts in the field to set a new precedent for transnational research frameworks in the study of the European Restorations.
