Fluid Mechanics of Environmental Interfaces

Environmental Fluid Mechanics (EFM) studies the motion of air and water at several different scales, the fate and transport of species carried along by these fluids, and the interactions among those flows and geological, biological, and engineered systems. EFM emerged some decades ago as a response to the need for tools to study problems of flow an

The Nadia Rivers

This book addresses ‘A to Z’ of Nadia Rivers including their etymology, mythology, geology, hydro-geomorphology, ecology, and socio-economic perspectives with an emphasis on the restoration of the environmental flow of the rivers through ecological modeling and Integrated River Basin Management. Since the foundation of Kolkata (1690) as the business capital of the East India Company, and the inception of colonial rule of the then British Government in eastern India (1765), Nadia Rivers (Bhagirathi, Jalangi, and Mathabhanga) were found to serve as the most important inland trading routes till the 1st quarter of the 20th century. Nadia Rivers also played significant roles in supplying drinking and irrigation water, besides promoting fishing, and recreation. However, the natural forcing in the form of neotectonic movements and anthropogenic influx in the form of rapid agricultural and urban-industrial expansion perturbed this river system to such as extent that they often fail to provide the basic hydro-geomorphic and ecological services inducing grave consequences on the life and livelihoods of the local people especially the farmers and fishermen.

Since the publication of its first edition in 1999, 'The Hydraulics of Open Channel Flow' has been praised by professionals, academics, students and researchers alike as the most practical modern textbook on open channel flow available. This new edition includes substantial new material on hydraulic modelling, in particular addressing unsteady open channel flows. There are also many new exercises and projects, including a major new revision assignment. This innovative textbook contains numerous examples and practical applications, and is fully illustrated with photographs. Dr Chanson introduces the basic principles of open channel flow and takes readers through the key topics of sediment transport, hydraulic modelling and the design of hydraulic structures. - Comprehensive coverage of the basic principles of key application areas of the hydraulics of open channel flow - New exercises and examples added to aid understanding - Ideal for use by students and lecturers in civil and environmental engineering

Near-Boundary Fluid Mechanics focuses on the near-boundary region and its significance. It delves into topics like boundary shear stress, drag reduction using polymer additives, turbulence sources, secondary currents, log-law validity, sediment transport, and more. Unlike similar books, it emphasizes the importance of the near-boundary region. This book is organized into chapters covering internal flows, external flows, loose boundary flows, and density currents. It extends Prandtl's fundamental concept to internal flows, showing how potential flow theory can describe flow without a solid boundary. In addition, the book provides a theoretical analysis of boundary shear stress in three-dimensi...

Estuaries of Australia in 2050 and beyond

Estuaries of Australia in 2050 and beyond

The book addresses the questions: Is Australia’s rapidly growing human population and economy environmentally sustainable for its estuaries and coasts? What is needed to enable sustainable development? To answer these questions, this book reports detailed studies of 20 iconic Australian estuaries and bays by leading Australian estuarine scientists. That knowledge is synthesised in time and space across Australia to suggest what Australian estuaries will look like in 2050 and beyond based on socio-economic decisions that are made now, and changes that are needed to ensure sustainability. The book also has a Prologue by Mr Malcolm Fraser, former Prime Minister of Australia, which bridges environmental science, population policy and sustainability.

Environmental Hydraulics is a new text for students and professionals studying advanced topics in river and estuarine systems. The book contains the full range of subjects on open channel flows, including mixing and dispersion, Saint-Venant equations method of characteristics and interactions between flowing water and its surrondings (air entrainment, sediment transport).Following the approach of Hubert Chanson's highly successful undergraduate textbook Hydraulics of Open Channel Flow, the reader is guided step-by-step from the basic principles to more advanced practical applications. Each section of the book contains many revision exercises, problems and assignments to help the reader test their learning in practical situations.·Complete text on river and estuarine systems in a single volume·Step-by-step guide to practical applications·Many worked examples and exercises

Fluid dynamics is the engineering science dealing with forces and energies generated by fluids in motion. Fluid dynamics and hydrodynamics play a vital role in everyday life. Practical examples include the flow motion in the kitchen sink, the exhaust fan above the stove, and the air conditioning system in our home. When driving a car, the air flow around the vehicle body induces some drag which increases with the square of the car speed and contributes to excess fuel consumption. Engineering applications encompass fluid transport in pipes and canals, energy generation, environmental processes and transportation (cars, ships, aircrafts). Other applications include coastal structures, wind flo...
