Symbolic Identity and the Cultural Memory of Saints
This volume examines the relationship between medieval cults of saints and regional and national identity formation in Europe both during and, to some extent, beyond the Middle Ages. It studies how collective identities have been expressed through saints’ cults and their appropriations in texts, visual representations, and music. Attention is given to various aspects of the role of medieval saints’ cults in European identity formation, as saints were used in the service of both religious and political agendas. Focusing on a range of European regions, this volume uses cults of medieval saints and their religious, cultural and political appropriations over time as a vehicle for studying changing cultural and social values. The articles here report research carried out under the European Science Foundation’s collaborative EuroCORECODE project: Symbols that Bind and Break Communities: Saints’ Cults as Stimuli and Expressions of Local, Regional, National and Universalist Identities (2010–2013/14), an international, interdisciplinary research venture funded by the National Research Councils of five countries: Austria, Denmark, Estonia, Hungary, and Norway.
The Cult of St. Anne in Medieval and Early Modern Europe
Dr Jennifer Welsh received her M.A. in Medieval Studies from Cornell University in 2000, and her M.A. and PhD in History from Duke University in 2004 and 2009. Her dissertation dealt with the cult of St. Anne in late medieval and early modern Europe. After four years as a Visiting Assistant Professor at the College of Charleston in Charleston, SC, she started working as an Assistant Professor in the Department of History at Lindenwood-University Belleville in Belleville, IL in August of 2014. This is her first book.

Images and Objects in Ritual Practices in Medieval and Early Modern Northern and Central Europe
This multidisciplinary collection of essays explores the functions, meanings and use of images and objects in various late Medieval and Early Modern social practices, which were linked by their ritual character. The book approaches ‘ritual’ as an action which is discussed under the general umbrella term “performative practice”, and is characterised by a synthesis between the repetitive and the extraordinary that carries an intense symbolic meaning and is emotionally charged. Images, spaces and rituals were closely interconnected in both the religious and the secular spheres, and played a relevant role in the symbolic communication of the time. The essays in this volume are devoted to a complex study of these phenomena in Northern and Central Europe, including regions which, due to linguistic or cultural barriers, have thus far received comparatively little attention in Anglo-American scholarship, including Scandinavia, Poland and the Baltic states.
Miraculous Crosses and Crucifixes in Late Medieval and Early Modern Norway
This book explores the function and symbolism of monumental wooden crosses and crucifixes from medieval and early modern Norway. Multiple sources indicate that these objects were understood to provide healing and protection for the pious. This book considers how crosses and crucifixes could be invested with such capabilities and where their powers were understood to stem from. According to the Lutheran doctrine, officially implemented in Norway with the Reformation in 1537, apotropaic and healing powers of objects were defined as superstition. However, crosses and crucifixes were still credited with miraculous powers and received pilgrims and gifts for centuries. This volume explores the religious understandings of miraculous sculptures across the Reformation period. Today, a remarkable corpus of almost 200 medieval wooden crosses and crucifixes have survived. In its consideration of a wide range of sculptures and related texts, the book sheds light on the relationship between art, text, and society in medieval and early modern northern Europe.

Old Testament Apocryphal Images in European Art
Apokryferna är en samling dramatiska och spännande berättelser som saknas i den hebreiska bibeln men som Martin Luther ansåg vara både bra och nyttiga att läsa. De fanns ofta med i äldre svenska biblar men försvann gradvis under 1800-talet. I den nya svenska bibelöversättningen ingår de som "Tillägg till Gamla testamentet". Elizabeth Philpot har studerat utvecklingen av apokryfiska motiv, både i katolska och protestantiska delar av Europa. Hennes forskning visar att konstnärer har fängslats av berättelserna genom århundradena, med början i Roms katakomber och fram till slutet av 1800-talet. I södra Sverige (Halland, Blekinge och Skåne) återfinns motiv från de apokryfiska böckerna på bonader och bonadsmålningar och i Dalarna på dalmålningar, vilket är unikt för hela Europa. Dalmåleri var ett folkligt måleri som utövades av självlärda småbönder i Dalarna under knappt hundra år från 1770-talet och framåt.
