Instructional design theory and practice has evolved over the past 30 years from an initial narrow focus on programmed instruction to a multidimensional field of study integrating psychology, technology, evaluation, measurement, and management. The growth of instructional design (ID) has occurred because of direct needs, problems, and goals from society. Its application in planning instruction first developed in the United States with the Department of Defense during World War II with the purpose of meeting immediate concerns for effective training of larger numbers of military personnel. From the beginning, ID has rapidly expanded into applications in industrial and executive training, voca...

Instructional Design in the Real World: A View from the Trenches offers guidance on how the traditional instructional design system has been used and how it must be changed to work within other systems. The environments and systems that affect the ADDIE (Analysis, Design, Development, Implementation, Evaluation) process and to which it must be adapted include corporations, industry, consulting organizations, health care facilities, church and charitable groups, the military, the government, educational institutions, and others. Its application must be filtered and altered by the environments and the systems where the learning or training takes place. Every chapter includes a case study showing how the application of ID strategies, learning theories, systems theory, management theories and practices and communication tools and practices are adapted and applied in various environments. The chapters also contain lessons learned, tool tips, and suggestions for the future.

Producing Instructional Systems

First Published in 1986. This two-volume work on the development of instruction is planned as a companion to an earlier book- Designing Instructional Systems. This earlier book dealt with the decision-making process involved in overall course planning and curriculum design. The present continues on to the micro-design stages of lesson and instructional materials development. The work is divided into two volumes. Volume 1, Producing Instructional Systems, deals with lesson planning for individualised instruction in the conventional classroom environment, as well as planning of all group learning situations, simulations and games. Volume 2, Developing Auto-Instructional Materials, deals with the development of many different types of materials, including programmed instruction, structural communication, various styles of structured writing, audio and audio-visual instruction and the many types of computer-based materials now being introduced in both education and training. Taken together, these two volumes give extensive coverage of practical techniques for the development of instruction.
