The stories were collected and translated by James Alexander Teit, who lived among the Kaska and other First Nations peoples in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. These photographs were taken during fieldwork carried out between 1877 and 1961 by employees of what is now the Canadian Museum of Civilization. The collection consists primarily of photographs taken by James A. Teit between 1911 and 1922 for the Geological Survey of Canada. Published in English.

Chris Arnett draws on extensive research and decades of work with Nłeʔkepmx people to document the variability and similarity of practices. Through a blend of Western records and Indigenous oral histories and tradition, rock art is revealed as communication between the spirit and physical worlds, information for later generations, and powerful protection against challenges to a people, land, and culture. Nłeʔkepmx have used such cultural means to forestall threats to their lifeways from the sixteenth century through the twentieth. As this important work attests, rock art remains a signature of resilience.
