British artist James White (b. 1967) is renowned for his monochrome paintings that explore everyday minutiae.Working from his own photographs, an ostensibly insignificant detail or moment is prolonged, the act of painting introducing layers of time to a given moment.Seemingly quiet domestic environments have a strong psychological element, alluding to a human presence without depicting any individuals; hinting at something that has occurred or that is occurring.Comprising full colour images, details and installation shots, this publication spans the past six years of James White's oeuvre and is published on the occasion of his exhibition, BODIES at Blain Southern, London (22 November 2017 - 20 January 2018).

"The Catalogue ... has been prepared with a view to accomplish two objects. One, to offer an inventory of all the books on the shelves of the Reference Department of the Manchester Free Library: the other, to supply ... a ready Key both to the subjects of the books, and to the names of the authors." - v. 1, the compiler to the reader.
JamesWhite (b.1967) paints flawless black and white photorealist images. His mundane, almost incidental works, which at first glance appear to be straightforward snapshots, on closer inspection reveal themselves to be beautifully painted images.Whites paintings invest the everyday with a level of attention that is both fascinating and disturbing.White constructs his own focused world from the fragments he chooses to paint, and his works have the intensity of a crime scene photograph an unexplained moment forever captured. The details he documents lend themselves to multiple narratives that might describe the drama that inhabits these inanimate objects. In the search for evidence, the viewer is seduced by the technique of the painting, but closer scrutiny only makes it harder to define the nature of what makes the work appear so photographic, so apparently real. The absolute becomes elusive inWhites work. His world exists on the periphery of vision, where his subject matter begins and ends.
