Matthew's Narrative Web
The Gospel of Matthew contains many repeated phrases and double stories. Scholars have usually used this as evidence to support various source theories. Taking a different approach, this book uses narrative and reader-response criticisms to explore the role verbal repetition plays in the rhetoric, characterization, and plot of the Gospel. The importance of variation, context, and the temporal dimension of narrative is highlighted. A concluding chapter treats two literary studies of repetition in modern narrative and the relation of narrative and reader-response criticisms to aural reception of the Gospels in the first century.

An Exemplary Man
While most scholars focus on the character of Cornelius as a model Gentile, Bonnie Flessen argues that Cornelius is also a model male figure for Luke's audience. When analyzed closely, the characterization of Cornelius reveals a multifaceted rhetorical strategy regarding both gender and empire. This strategy lifts up a rather surprising portrait of an exemplary man who represents the Roman Empire and yet nevertheless manifests the virtues of submission, piety, and generosity. Flessen also proposes a hermeneutic of masculinity as a means to exegete Acts and other New Testament texts. This critical lens provides interpreters with a way of thinking about gender when female characters are absent or sparse. Although constructs of gender are embedded in texts, interpreters can use recent scholarship on masculinity along with extrabiblical evidence as tools to excavate the contours of the male figure in antiquity.

Masculinities in the Gospel of Matthew
In Masculinities in the Gospel of Matthew: Joseph, John, Peter, and Judas, Kendra A. Mohn examines the masculinity of four figures in Matthew's Gospel in light of ancient understandings of masculinity exemplified by Roman emperors and emulated by figures such as Herod the Great and Herod Antipas. Utilizing three criteria common to elite Roman hegemonic expressions of masculinity-wealth, divine service, and dominating control over self and others-Mohn argues that the nonelites represented by the New Testament texts negotiated ancient expectations of masculinity in a variety of ways that both subverted and upheld Roman imperial ideals. This response to dominant masculinity marked by hegemony has important implications for the understanding of critical concepts such as discipleship and leadership, as well as the expectations for masculinity expressed in contemporary religious contexts.
