The Palace Beautiful

John Bunyan is best known as the author of The Pilgrim’s Progress, his immortal allegory of the Christian life, as well as for his influential spiritual autobiography, Grace Abounding to the Chief of Sinners. Less known is that Bunyan’s doctrine of the church drew the ire of seventeenth-century Baptists and thrust him into a controversy over the terms of church membership and communion that helped to define the boundaries of Baptist identity. In The Palace Beautiful, Timothy Haupt offers a historical and systematic analysis of Bunyan’s ecclesiology, a comprehensive examination of the communion controversy, and a thorough investigation of seventeenth-century Baptist identity. Was Bunyan a Baptist? Haupt argues that the communion controversy was not a debate among fellow Baptists over a secondary issue of church practice, but a dispute over fundamentally different ecclesiologies.

Who Can Take the Lord’s Supper?

Baptism and the Lord's Supper are likely more basic for the church than you think. When Jesus inaugurated the new covenant by his death on the cross, he established baptism as the new covenant sign of entry and the Lord's Supper as the new covenant sign of participation. These signs identify believers with Christ and his people. They are integral to the existence, membership, and discipline of the local church. In answer to the question "Who can take the Lord's Supper?" this book catalogues four major positions in the broad Baptist tradition. While proponents of various views have appealed to the necessity of circumcision for participation in Passover as evidence for their position, none hav...

Multisite Churches

The multisite church model has been consistently challenged by those who deem it unbiblical and incompatible with God's design for the local church, but does Scripture support this claim? In Multisite Churches, pastor and church vitalist Dustin Slaton posits that congregational polity is compatible with the multisite model, dismantling critiques with both urgency and care for the local church's future. At a time when church fostering and church adoption are predicted to increase significantly, the multisite church model is a solution that can support the adoption of churches. Bringing in personal experience and erudite research, Slaton heuristically demonstrates a methodological approach of ecclesiology with a theological framework for the multisite model, fairly addressing both critics and supporters. Multisite Churches is a resource for biblical ecclesiology with wide-ranging benefits for both clergy and congregant. Those prayerfully discerning whether they can transition to a multisite church in a biblical way and those who are interested in the topic will benefit from the guidance and insight provided in this timely resource.

Mere Hope

Mere Hope

How are Christians to live in such difficult times? Unique of all people, Christians are called to embrace a hopeful outlook on life. Mere Hope offers the core, Christ-centered perspective that all Christians share, and that Christians alone have to offer a world filled with frustration, pain, and disappointment. For those in darkness, despair, and discouragement, for those in the midst of trials, suffering, and injustice, mere hope lives. The spirit of the age is cynicism. When our leaders, our families, and our friends let us down at every turn, this isn't surprising. But we need another perspective; we need hope. Rather than reflecting resigned despair or distracted indifference, author Jason Duesing argues, our lives ought to be shaped by the gospel of Jesus—a gospel of hope.

Recover evangelicalism's foundations by returning to its architect.None doubt the influence of Carl F. H. Henry, the "theological architect" of contemporary evangelicalism. Through his prolific writing and editorial role in Christianity Today, Henry is known for addressing contemporary theology, individual and social ethics, and cultural criticism. But he has been critiqued for an underdeveloped pneumatology. In Carl F. H. Henry on The Holy Spirit, Jesse M. Payne argues that Henry cannot truly be understood apart from his mature pneumatology. The Spirit plays a vital role in three major areas of Henry's theology: revelation, ecclesiology, and ethics. These seemingly disparate topics are tied together by his view of a Spirit--inspired Bible ordering a Spirit--enlivened body composed of Spirit--filled believers. Readers will gain a more holistic view of Henry, the role of the Spirit in his life and thought, and early neo--evangelical theology.
