Remember Me brings together contributors from around the world with unique insight on the ways in which one's relationship with loved ones continues, endures, and perhaps even grows after death. Much of the available literature speaks of healthy bereavement as letting go of the deceased and moving forward with life. This new text challenges that notion, discussing the meaning attributed to death and to the anticipation of death. The living, as presented in these innovative chapters, construct social entities of those who have died, via the carrying out of wishes in the Will; pursuing legal claims; or simply attributing certain desires, emotions, or choices to the deceased reconstitutes them as active, even vital, voices even after biological death. Just as life itself, the end of life and death is an interdisciplinary matter. A clear psychological theme and focus ties together these perspectives under three conceptual areas: the anticipation of death; the social life of the deceased and the legal embodiment of the deceased.

Organized groups of victims' families and friends have emerged since September 11, 2001, to become a powerful voice in U.S. counterterrorist policy and legislation. These groups were remarkably successful in getting the 9/11 Commission established and in getting the commission's most important recommendations enacted. This report documents these groups and compares them to groups formed in response to other terrorist attacks.

First Published in 1999. The recent conviction of Ramzi Ahmed Yousef for plotting what prosecutors called '48 hours of terror in the sky' by conspiring to bomb a dozen US airliners, the increasing number of man portable SAM attacks on aircraft, and the recent crash of a hijacked Ethiopian airliner off the Comoro Islands causing 127 deaths, show that aviation confronts a wide range of security threats. The aim of this volume, published ten years after Lockerbie, is to assess the changing threats to aviation security. It is a sad fact that despite major efforts by certain states to enhance security, much more needs to be done to remedy weaknesses in international aviation security if further Lockerbies are to be prevented. The contributors examine threats and vulnerabilities in the light of recent developments in aviation security and consider the prospects for strengthening the response at national and international levels. The study is of obvious relevance not only to security and academic specialists but also to the international civil aviation community and national policy makers.

Jim Swire

Born in 1936, Herbert Swire, known to most as Jim Swire, led a quiet life as a doctor in England, unaware that his world would be forever altered by tragedy. The event that changed the course of his life occurred on December 20, 1988, when his 23-year-old daughter, Flora, boarded Pan Am Flight 103. Flora, who had been looking forward to spending Christmas with her American boyfriend, never made it to the United States. The plane exploded over Lockerbie, Scotland, killing all 270 people aboard, including 11 on the ground. In the aftermath, Jim Swire's life was irrevocably linked to the bombing, as his daughter's death sparked a relentless campaign for justice. The investigation into the bombing soon pointed to two Libyan nationals, Abdelbaset al-Megrahi and Lamin Khalifah Fhimah, and Jim Swire found himself at the center of a growing movement for the victims' families. Swire became the spokesman for UK Families Flight 103, a group of relatives of those who died in the bombing. But his grief didn't only lead him to seek justice for his daughter-it also led him to take dramatic actions to highlight the failings of the security measures that allowed the attack to happen.

Scottish Gaelic in Twelve Weeks has been written both as a self-tuition course for beginners and also for use within the classroom. You may want to learn Gaelic because of a general interest in Celtic or Scottish history and culture, or because it was the everyday language of your ancestors. The cynical observer may wonder if the exercise is worthwhile, when only 1.5 per cent of Scotland's population speak the language. However, Gaelic is far from dead; in some parts of the Highlands and Western Isles it is the everyday language and it represents an important part of the United Kingdom's cultural mix. There are Gaelic-learning classes in almost every area of Scotland. Each lesson in the book contains some essential points of grammar explained and illustrated, exercises, a list of new vocabulary (with a guide to pronunciation, using the International Phonetics Alphabet), and an item of conversation. This new edition includes an audio download link.

The book of the Sky Original miniseries, starring Colin Firth as Jim Swire and directed by Otto Bathurst. The destruction of Pan Am Flight 103 over the Scottish town of Lockerbie in December 1988 was the largest attack on Britain since World War Two. 259 passengers and 11 townsfolk of Lockerbie were murdered. Libyan Abdelbaset al-Megrahi was convicted of the crime. He maintained his innocence until his death in 2012. Among the passengers was Flora, beloved daughter of Dr Jim Swire. Jim accepted American claims that Libya was responsible, but during the Lockerbie Trial he began to distrust key witnesses and supposed firm evidence. Since then it has been revealed that the USA paid millions of dollars to two central identification witnesses, and the only forensic evidence central to the prosecution has been discredited. The book takes us along Dr. Swire's journey as his initial grief and loss becomes a campaign to uncover the truth behind not only a personal tragedy but one of the modern world's most shocking events.
