The Shakespeare Game, Or, The Mystery of the Great Phoenix
Originally published in Moscow, The Shakespeare Game quickly hit Russia's "nonfiction best seller" list. It was an intellectual sensation and went through three editions in the first year. Asking why do we have Shakespeare, and who is Shakespeare, Gililov has studied watermarks and printer's type, registration dates, and documented biographical details of Shakespeares contemporaries, considering the physical evidence as well as the personalities and motives of the suspects. Gililov suggests an answer to the Shakespeare riddle -- one that will delight literature fans and confound the proponents of other "candidate bards." He finds the key in the most mysterious Shakespeare poem, The Phoenix and the Turtle, and the collection in which it was published; he identifies its heroes and reveals the meaning in this shocking requiem and its connection with works by Ben Jonson, John Donne and other great contemporaries of "Shakespeare." Marston, Rivalry, Rapprochement, and Jonson
Significant and unexplored signs of John Marston's literary rivalry with Ben Jonson are investigated here by Charles Cathcart. The centrepiece of the book is its argument that the anonymous play The Family of Love, sometimes attributed to Thomas Middleton and sometimes to Lording Barry, was in part the work of John Marston, and that it constitutes a whimsical statement of amity with Jonson. The book concerns itself with material rarely or never viewed as part of the "Poets' War" (such as the mutual attempted cuckoldings of The Insatiate Countess and the Middle Temple performance of Twelfth Night) rather than with texts (like Satiromastix and Poetaster) long considered in this light.

The literary genre of “thumb bibles” belongs to the category of miniature books and is a subtype of children's bibles. Thumb bibles summarize the full bible by paraphrasing selected biblical narratives. Adhering to the Reformation principle of sola scriptura, their aim is to teach children and youth the biblical basics. For this purpose, many of them are illustrated. Popular with collectors, thumb bibles have largely been ignored by researchers. This publication is the first academic study of thumb bibles. For the first time in their centuries-long history, it explores their genesis in Britain, investigates their subsequent development in Germany, and presents their climax in America. What emerges is the theological, literary, pedagogical and pious profile of a fascinating genre.
