The Graded School

This book examines the historical development of age-graded classrooms, a defining feature of modern public education that became embedded in the “grammar of schooling”—the fundamental organizational structures that shape how schools operate. Focusing on the implementation of gradation in New York City, the study traces the transformation of an urban school system from the nineteenth to the early twentieth century. Using actor-network theory as its analytical framework, the book explores how gradation emerged through complex assemblies of human and non-human actors along with the practical challenges of implementing graded systems, the educational concepts that supported these changes, and the administrative innovations required to manage increasingly complex school systems. Drawing on extensive archival research, this work illuminates how the age-graded classroom became a foundational element of US-American public education in rapidly growing urban centers.

The transformations of people’s relations to media content, technologies and institutions raise new methodological challenges and opportunities for audience research. This edited volume aims at contributing to the development of the repertoire of methods and methodologies for audience research by reviewing and exemplifying approaches that have been stimulated by the changing conditions and practices of audiences. The contributions address a range of issues and approaches related to the diversification, integration and triangulation of methods for audience research, to the gap between the researched and the researchers, to the study of online social networks, and to the opportunities brought about by Web 2.0 technologies as research tools.

The Palgrave Handbook of Family Sociology in Europe

This handbook provides a meaningful overview of topical themes within family sociology as an academic field as well as empirical realities in various societal contexts across Europe. More than sixty prominent European scholars’ original texts present the field’s main theoretical and methodological approaches in addition to issues such as families as relationships, parental arrangements, parenting practices and child well-being, family policies in welfare state regimes, family lives in migration, and family trajectories. Presenting cutting-edge research on findings, theoretical interpretations, and solutions to methodological challenges, it is a timely tool for researchers, teachers, students, and family practitioners who wish to familiarise themselves with the state of family sociology in Europe.

Education in a Globalized World

The seemingly amorphous phenomenon we call 'globalization' involves concrete realities that make it a major source of social change in our contemporary world. Bringing globalization alive for students, this book uses examples and perspectives from economics, technology, and mass media to show how globalization is producing unprecedented impacts on education and culture. Education at all levels-from primary school to university education-is undergoing a world wide transformation of its objectives, values, and practices. New technologies and communication practices have promoted the West's optimism that market forces can replace the former governmental responsibilities for social welfare and t...

Developing Educational Leadership

`The papers in the book make a very useful and stimulating contribution to the current debate about evidence-informed practice in relation to developing educational leadership′ - Journal of In-Service Education `This is a very worthwhile book with, unusually, something for different dispositions. Reading it is like attending a research conference; an activity restricted to a fortunate few. For those who have never attended one, put this on your bookshelf! I would recommend that it takes a prominent place on reading lists for masters courses in educational leadership′ - Mervyn Flecknoe, Leeds Metropolitan University Evidence-Informed Policy and Practice (EIPP) has emerged as an important ...
