Social Capital and the Reintegration of Former Combatants

This book develops a theory of successful reintegration after intra-state conflict, centred on the development of social capital and its use by former combatants after demobilization. The book shows that those former combatants who are able to develop social ties and social capital in their communities, with their families and through involvement in peacebuilding activities will be more likely to experience successful reintegration as measured by their satisfaction with the reintegration process. The volume’s research is based primarily on the results of a survey of former combatants in Colombia’s conflict. The authors surveyed former members of the two largest and most powerful of the a...

Fueling Sovereignty

European colonialism was often driven by the pursuit of natural resources, and the resulting colonization and decolonization processes have had a profound impact on the formation of the majority of sovereign states that exist today. But how exactly have natural resources influenced the creation of formerly colonized states? And would the world map of sovereign states look significantly different if not for these resources? These questions are at the heart of Fueling Sovereignty, which focuses primarily on oil as the most significant natural resource of the modern era. Naosuke Mukoyama provides a compelling analysis of how colonial oil politics contributed to the creation of some of the world's most “unlikely” states. Drawing on extensive archival sources on Brunei, Qatar and Bahrain, he sheds light on how some small colonial entities achieved independence despite their inclusion in a merger project promoted by the metropole and regional powers.

Post-Conflict Referendums and Peace Processes

This book provides a comparative study of the impact of referendums on conflict resolution and peacebuilding in post-conflict societies. Post-conflict referendums have increasingly been held as part of peace processes. While policy-makers are hopeful that these referendums serve peace and democracy, the burgeoning literature on them has expressed significant reservations about their use, particularly on territorial issues, because referendums do not have mechanisms for compromise. To gauge the actual impact of these referendums on peace processes, the book systematically compares three post-conflict referendums on self-determination held with their respective central governments’ consent, ...

Autoimmune liver disease is defined as immune-mediated chronic liver disease of unknown etiology. The forms of autoimmune liver disease include autoimmune hepatitis, primary biliary cirrhosis, primary sclerosing cholangitits and an overlapping syndrome known as autoimmune cholangitis. These diseases were once considered to be rare. However, incidence of these diseases has increased with advanced of diagnostic techniques. During the past ten years, we have made enormous progress in understanding autoimmune mechanisms. Furthermore, new clinical and epidemiological studies have provided information that has changed our concept of autoimmune liver disease. This symposium was indeed a success due to the quality presentations by active researchers in the world.
