The Ottoman Turks provided refuge for Jews fleeing from persecution in Europe and Byzantium from the emergence of the Ottoman Empire in the 13th century until the 19th century, when it also received thousands of Jews persecuted in Tzarist Russia, and the 20th century, when it provided refuge for Jews fleeing from Russian pogroms and the Nazi holocaust.
