The development of constitutive relations for geotechnical materials, with the help of numerical models, have increased notably the ability to predict and to interpret the mechanical behaviour of geotechnical works. This work covers rock excavations, soil excavations, earth fills and dams.
Tunnel Design Methods covers analytical, numerical, and empirical methods for the design of tunnels in soil and in rock. The material is intended for design engineers looking for detailed methods, for graduate students who are interested in tunnelling, and for researchers working on various aspects of ground-support interaction under static and seismic loading. The book is divided into seven chapters, covering fundamental concepts on ground and support behavior and on ground-excavation-support interaction and provides detailed information on analytical and numerical methods used for the design of tunnels, with applications, and on the latest developments on empirical methods. The principles and formulations included are used, throughout the book, to provide insight into the response of tunnels under both simple and complex loading conditions, thus providing the reader with fundamental understanding of tunnel behavior. Both authors have experience in tunnelling and have worked extensively in practice, designing tunnels both in the United States and abroad, and in research.
This book introduces the latest frontier of the tunneling science and technology in Japan. It contains a collection of 175 papers presented at the International Symposium on Modern Tunneling Science and Technology held in Kyoto, 2001.
In a world flooded with wellness trends, sauna therapy stands apart—not as a fad, but as a time-tested practice now backed by cutting-edge science. This book bridges ancestral wisdom with modern physiology, showing how heat exposure activates powerful healing mechanisms in the human body—from cellular repair and detoxification to improved cardiovascular function, immune resilience, and mental clarity. Written for curious readers, spa professionals, and health innovators, The Sauna Therapy for the 21st Century goes beyond relaxation. It explains: - Why heat is the true therapeutic tool, and the sauna is just the delivery system. - How sauna use mimics exercise, activates heat shock protei...
This document presents the technical details of the first-ever country-driven Global Soil Organic Carbon Map (GSOCmap). This map allows the estimation of Soil Organic Carbon (SOC) stocks from 0 to 30 cm. It represents a key contribution to the Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) indicator 15.3.1, which defines the area of degraded land. The novelty of this map is the fact that it is the first Global SOC stocks assessment which is produced through a participatory approach. Supported by the GSP-Secretariat, countries developed their capacities and stepped up efforts to compile or collect all available soil information at the national level. This technical report is a companion report to the GSOCmap V1.6.0. It presents methodologies and process of compiling the Global Soil organic Carbon Map (GSOCmap).
