Nautical Rutters and New Bodies of Knowledge in the Age of the First Globalization, 1400-1600

The European maritime expansion of the fifteenth century reshaped global politics, economies, and perceptions of space. Central to this transformation was the mastery of long-distance sea routes and the development of rutters—technical documents recording navigational data and geographic observations. Despite their significance, rutters have often been overlooked in studies of European imperial expansion and globalization. This book highlights the indispensable role of rutters and ships' logbooks in early modern navigation and knowledge production. Examining their legal, scientific, and cultural dimensions, it explores their evolution, influence on cartography, and impact beyond Europe, particularly in the Indian Ocean. With contributions from experts in the field, this volume underscores rutters as more than navigational aids—they were pivotal instruments in shaping global interconnectedness. Essential reading for historians of science, maritime history, and globalization, this book reveals how these documents transformed Europe's perception of a world connected by oceans.

Connections between the Society of Jesus and astrology used to appear as unexpected at best. Astrology was never viewed favourably by the Church, especially in early modern times, and since Jesuits were strong defenders of Catholic orthodoxy, most historians assumed that their religious fervour would be matched by an equally strong rejection of astrology. This groundbreaking and compelling study brings to light new Jesuit scientific texts revealing a much more positive, practical, and nuanced attitude. What emerges forcefully is a totally new perspective into early modern Jesuit culture, science, and education, highlighting the element that has been long overlooked: astrology.

The Society of Jesus began a tradition of collecting books and curating those collections at its foundation. These libraries were important to both their European sites and their missions; they helped build a global culture as part of early modern European evangelization. When the Society was suppressed, the Jesuits’ possessions were seized and redistributed, by transfer to other religious orders, confiscation by governments, or sale to individuals. These possessions were rarely returned, and when, in 1814, the Society was restored, the Jesuits had to begin to build new libraries from scratch. Their practices of librarianship, though not their original libraries, left an intellectual legacy which still informs library science today. While there are few European Jesuit universities left, institutions of higher learning administered by the Society of Jesus remain important to the intellectual development of students and communities around the world, supported by large, rich library collections.
