In Watching the Virtues, Jolanta Rzegocka offers an account of the Jesuit theatre in the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth through the playbills, which record an astonishing variety of story designs and tales crafted for the stage. Her study reveals the profound role of Jesuit theatre (1564–1773) in the education of Polish-Lithuanian youth, mostly of Catholic but also of other faiths, aiming to instil virtues within the political and social fabric of the Commonwealth. Drawing from over 800 playbills, college playbooks, diaries as well as newly uncovered plays, Rzegocka paints a picture of a theatre deeply engaged with contemporary political and moral issues. She demonstrates how Jesuit theatre extended beyond educational institutions, influencing broader political discussions and public life, particularly regarding issues of authority, faith, and ethical behaviour. The study presents as a cultural phenomenon the diffusion through Jesuit theatre of Anglo-Scottish themes and narratives in Poland-Lithuania and discusses a hitherto unknown play about Thomas More (1765).

During the early modern period, visual imagery was put to ever new uses as many disciplines adopted visual criteria for testing truth claims, representing knowledge, or conveying information. Religious propagandists, political writers, satirists, cartographers, the scientific community, and others experimented with new uses of visual images. Artists, writers, preachers, musicians, and performers, among others, often employed visual images or conjured mental images to connect with their audiences. Contributors to this interdisciplinary collection creatively explore how the exponential growth in images, especially prints, impacted the intellectual horizons and the visual awareness of viewers in early modern Germany. Each of the chapters serves as a case study for one or more of the volume?s sub-themes: art, visual literacy, and strategies of presentation; audience and the art of persuasion; the art of envisioning; the ephemeral arts and theatricality; the built environment and spatial settings; and the history of the visual.

Amandus Ivanschiz

The ensembles associated with monastery and parish churches were a very important element of musical life in Central Europe around the mid-eighteenth century. Yet the music created by early Classical composers, which constituted the core of their repertoire, remains poorly explored. Fr. Amandus Ivanschiz OSPPE (1727–1758) was one of such musicians, active in monasteries in Ranna, Wiener Neustadt, Rome, and Graz. Recent findings reveal that he died in 1758 at the young age of 31, which is much earlier than previously thought. Consequently, the dating of his compositions and their position in the context of the transformation of musical language in the middle of the eighteenth century needs to be revisited. This volume is the first to provide a critical evaluation of the attribution of works ascribed to Ivanschiz, which brought to light the true scope and reception of his oeuvre. The fact that there are nearly 300 copies of his works preserved in various archives across eleven European countries indicates that his music was readily performed and disseminated, and places Ivanschiz among the most popular monk-composers of his epoch. Particularly in the humanities and social sciences, festschrifts are a popular forum for discussion. The IJBF provides quick and easy general access to these important resources for scholars and students. The festschrifts are located in state and regional libraries and their bibliographic details are recorded. Since 1983, more than 659,000 articles from more than 30,500 festschrifts, published between 1977 and 2011, have been catalogued.

Innovations in Biomedical Engineering 2024

The presented monograph is a compact study covering articles dealing with activities closely related to Biomedical Engineering. Papers on biomaterials, biomechanics, as well as the use of information technology and engineering modelling methods in medicine are presented, divided into two chapters. The topics include not only theoretical considerations, but also practical applications of research conducted in cooperation between engineers, doctors and physiotherapists. We believe that the presented works will have an impact on the development of the Biomedical Engineering field of science. We would like to thank all the people who contributed to the creation of this monograph - both the authors of all the works and those involved in technical works.
