Yearbook of Transnational History

The Yearbook of Transnational History is dedicated to disseminating pioneering research in the field of transnational history. This second volume provides readers with articles on topics such as transnational marriages, exile, soccer, and missionaries as well as on the campaigns in Communist countries for freeing the American civil-rights activist Angela Davis. These articles highlight the movement of ideas, people, policies, and practices across various cultures and societies and explore the relations, connections, and spaces created by these movements. The articles in this volume explore interconnected historical phenomena in Asia, North and South America, and Europe from the late seventeenth century to the late twentieth century. These articles make clear that historical phenomena such as soccer and exile cannot be contained and explained within just one national setting. This volume also offers a theoretical article that provides insights into the concept of intercultural transfer studies and its relationship to comparative and global history. and an article that surveys the state of research in the field of transnational crime.

Is terrorism's violence essentially symbolic? Does it impact on culture primarily through the media? What kinds of performative effect do the various discourses surrounding terrorism have? Such questions have not only become increasingly important in terrorism studies, they have also been concerns for many literary writers. This book is the first extensive study of modern literature's engagement with terrorism. Ranging from the 1880s to the 1980s, the terrorism examined is as diverse as the literary writings on it: chapters include discussions of Joseph Conrad's novels on Anarchism and Russian Nihilism; Wyndham Lewis's avant-garde responses to Syndicalism and the militant Suffragettes; Ezra ...

Laboratory Techniques in Cellular and Molecular Medicine

The methodological book ""Laboratory techniques in cellular and molecular medicine"" is intended for students of bachelor, master, and doctoral study programmes at faculties of science, medicine, and veterinary medicine, as well as for laboratory technicians interested in methodological approaches of contemporary cellular and molecular medicine. The book does not aim to provide a comprehensive overview of the current state of the art in cellular and molecular medicine, that would be a superhuman task. The aim of the 56-member author team is to provide readers with an overview of the methods established and tested at the Institute of Molecular and Translational Medicine of the Faculty of Medi...

This book is listed "G" to get it onto the menu; Lulu requires registration to see adult-themed items. But the book is a "R"-rated item with some very adult themes. The intended audience is not children. It is the story of Leon LeGros, a young man who sought fortune in the South Pacific. Leon, today a resident of Luxembourg, led an extraordinary life, as a chef, as a cook in the mining camps of the Solomon Islands and Australia, where he matured before returning to Europe and a more responsible life. Today, he is a parking lot attendant, a sacrifice for the one to whom he has dedicated this book. In the process of getting there, Leon has lived several lifetimes of adventure that far exceed anything many of us have experienced. There is eroticism in the book, though it is not salacious. This book was not written to titillate; but to document the life of an extraordinary man, warts and all, and to talk about how his life has changed in more than five decades.

From the Galleons to the Highlands

The essays in this book demonstrate the importance of transatlantic and intra-American slave trafficking in the development of colonial Spanish America, highlighting the Spanish colonies’ previously underestimated significance within the broader history of the slave trade. Spanish America received African captives not only directly via the transatlantic slave trade but also from slave markets in the Portuguese, English, Dutch, French, and Danish Americas, ultimately absorbing more enslaved Africans than any other imperial jurisdiction in the Americas except Brazil. The contributors focus on the histories of slave trafficking to, within, and across highly diverse regions of Spanish America ...
