In accessible and jargon-free language, Margrit Eichler provides a systematic approach to identifying, eliminating, and preventing sexist bias in social science research. She begins with a general discussion of the problems and implications of sexism in research, and then identifies four primary sources of bias: androcentricity, overgeneralization, gender insensitivity, and double standards. Three derivative sources of bias -- sex appropriateness, familism, and sexual dichotism -- are also discussed. The author conducted interviews for over five years with 20 homeless and addicted women with different experiences of sexual abuse and sexism and racism. They vividly demonstrate how both neo-conservative and neo-liberal prescriptions for solving their problems are unworkable. The work considers the linkage of homelessness and addiction, provides profiles of the interviewee, and outlines methodology used in the research.
