This book introduces the reader to Serres' unique manner of 'doing philosophy' that can be traced throughout his entire oeuvre: namely as a novel manner of bearing witness. It explores how Serres takes note of a range of epistemologically unsettling situations, which he understands as arising from the short-circuit of a proprietary notion of capital with a praxis of science that commits itself to a form of reasoning which privileges the most direct path (simple method) in order to expend minimal efforts while pursuing maximal efficiency. In Serres' universal economy, value is considered as a function of rarity, not as a stock of resources. This book demonstrates how Michel Serres has develop...
This book examines how renewed forms of artistic activism were developed in the wake of the neoliberal repression since the 1980s. The volume shows the diverse ways in which artists have sought to confront systemic crises around the globe, searching for new and enduring forms of building communities and reimagining the political horizon. The authors engage in a dialogue with these artistic efforts and their histories – in particular the earlier artistic activism that was developed during the civil rights era in the 1960s and 70s – providing valuable historical insight and new conceptual reflection on the future of aesthetic resilience. This book will be of interest to scholars in contemporary art, history of art, film and literary studies, protest movements, and social movements.
Global Literatures and Cultures of Modernity: Critical Perspectives from India brings together essays written by academicians and scholars from India to scrutinize how global modernities have been shaped since World War II, from the Indian perspective. It examines the literary musings of Anglophone writers hailing from various parts of the globe whose diverse voices present compelling narratives on modernity vis-à-vis the human condition. This volume brings together critical essays on writers such as Girish Karnad, Anita Desai, Anita Nair, and Jean Arasanayagam to examine the South Asian experience; by Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie and Naguib Mahfouz to explore the African and Arabic world order...

"Who if not we . . . ?" consists of seven exhibitions (episodes) and a number of additional projects throughout Europe organized by "Thinking Forward"--a cultural program formed on the occasion of the Dutch presidency of the European Union. The main motivation of this visual art program is to discuss how art can participate in current social and political change. In the words of Maria Hlavajova: "The question ÎWho if not we . . . ?' points to our primary motivation: to interpret this political assignment as an opportunity to modestly appeal to Îwe'--European artists, thinkers, and others--to take an active part in creating a new reality through artistic and knowledge production. If not we, then others will, and we run the risk that such a future would not necessarily be shaped around our own hopes and dreams." This publication presents comprehensive insight into all parts of the program, and includes new texts by Ole Bouman, Boris Groys, Igor Zabel, and others.
Artists and writers consider a tactical desertion from the "culture wars"--a refusal to be distracted, an embrace of the emancipatory understanding of culture. Deserting from the Culture Wars reflects upon and intervenes in our current moment of ever-more polarizing ideological combat, often seen as the return of the "culture wars." How are these culture wars defined and waged? Engaging in a theater of war that has been delineated by the enemy is a shortcut to defeat. Getting out of the reactive mode that produces little but a series of Pavlovian responses, this book proposes a tactical desertion from the culture wars as they are being waged today--a refusal to play the other side's war games, an unwillingness to be distracted.
