The Snedden Saga
James Snedden (1760-1850) was born in the parish of Alloa, county of Clakmannon, Scotland. He was a descendant of James Swadon (born 1701) and Grizal McClaran. James Snedden and his wife, Christina Montgomery immigrated to Ontario in 1821. Descendants lived throughout Canada and also in New York, New Jersey, Washington, Wisconsin, Minnesota, Tennessee, Nebraska, and elsewhere.
Celebrating a Century of 4-H in Ontario
This book celebrates a century of 4-H in Ontario through stories of members and families from across rural Ontario who have been involved in the 4-H program. Part 1 of the book was originally published in 1995 on the 80th anniversary of 4-H in Ontario and covers its early beginnings and the growth of the 4-H program at the provincial level and in each county and district of the province. Part 2 covers the last 20 years and the story of 4-H Ontario's growth to become an independent organization and the impact of the 4-H program on families who have been involved in 4-H through several generations. The book showcases how 4-H has kept up with the times to provide diverse programs and a continuum of excellence to inspire youth and give them hands-on experience to develop transferable skills for their future. Canadian Women in the Sky
How a few women fought to board planes, then fly them, and finally to break through earth’s atmosphere into space. The story of how women in Canada, from Newfoundland to British Columbia, struggled to win a place in the world of air travel, first as passengers, then as flight attendants and pilots, and, finally, as astronauts. Anecdotes, sometimes humourous and always amazing, trace these women’s challenges and successes, their slow march over 100 years from scandal to acceptance, whether in Second World War skies, in hostile northern bush country, and even beyond Earth’s atmosphere. Imperial Immigrants
The impact of the British Empire on the history of the Upper Ottawa Valley is explored through the experiences of early emigration-assisted 19th-century Scottish immigrants. Between 1815 and 1832, Great Britain settled more than 3,500 individuals, mostly from the Scottish Lowlands, in the Ottawa Valley. These government-assisted emigrations, which began immediately after the Napoleonic Wars, are explored to reveal their impact on Upper Canada. Seeking to transform their lives and their society, early Scots settlers crossed the Atlantic for their own purposes. Although they did not blindly serve the interests of empire builders, their settlement led to the dispossession of the original First Nation inhabitants, thus supporting the British imperial government’s strategic military goals. After transferring homeland religious and political conflict to the colony, Scottish settlers led the demand for political reform that emerged in the 1830s. As a consequence, their migration and settlement reveals as much about the depth of social conflict in the homeland and in the colonies as it does about the preoccupations of the British imperial state.
Almonte's Brothers of the Wind
The little eastern Ontario town of Almonte has produced two giants in the field of athletics. Neither was a world champion, neither was an Olympic medallist, but each in his own way transformed the sports world. Both were pioneers in the development of physical education as a serious academic discipline. James Naismith contributed his own invention, basketball, to the modern world. R.
